Data Steward (f/m/d) Munich Data Science Institute and LETSIMMUN (TRR 338)

26.02.2026, Wissenschaftliches Personal

We are seeking a committed Data Steward to act as a central contact point for research data management within LETSimmun and as a team member at the MDSI.

The Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI) and the Collaborative Research Center LETSimmun (TRR 338) are jointly seeking a Data Steward (full-time, starting at the earliest possible date) to support research data management at Technical University of Munich (TUM). Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU) and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) are also sites of the research network, and there will be close cooperation with their data stewards.

About TRR 338 LETSimmun

The DFG-funded Transregional Collaborative Research Center TRR 338 – LETSimmun pursues a strategic and holistic approach to lymphocyte engineering, aiming to explore, develop, and combine innovative engineering technologies and therapeutic targets. The project brings together internationally recognised researchers and clinician-scientists with proven expertise in clinical lymphocyte engineering, alongside early-career researchers and interdisciplinary experts contributing key competencies at critical engineering interfaces and emerging technologies.

Through this integrative framework, LETSimmun seeks to advance fundamental and translational immunology by systematically linking experimental, technological, and clinical perspectives across multiple institutions.

About MDSI

The Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI) is an integrative research institute at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with an interdisciplinary and cross-faculty focus on data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The institute acts as a facilitator and enabler of cutting-edge data science practices, technologies, and IT infrastructures across the university, connecting and consolidating TUM’s entire data-related expertise. One of its focuses is Research Data Management (RDM), where MDSI actively contributes to shaping how data can be stored, managed, and analysed across disciplines and application domains.

About the Role

We are seeking a committed Data Steward to act as a central contact point for research data management within LETSimmun and as a team member at the MDSI. Within a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, the Data Steward plays a key role in supporting coherent research data management across projects, enabling interoperability between diverse datasets, and facilitating knowledge exchange across institutional and disciplinary boundaries.

The position directly supports LETSimmun’s holistic approach by ensuring that data generated across engineering technologies, biological systems, and clinical contexts remain FAIR, well-documented, and reusable throughout the funding period and beyond, bridging between experimental researchers, bioinformaticians, and research IT infrastructures across the three participating universities.

The Data Steward will also play a key role in fostering a cross-institutional community of practice for immunology data stewardship and in supporting alignment of practices across partner institutions. Due to the close collaboration required with researchers and team members, the position requires regular on-site presence and is not suitable as a fully remote role.

Responsibilities:

As the Data Steward, you will:

  • Design and implement harmonised data workflows to ensure data quality, interoperability and reusability
  • Support the collection, curation, integration and documentation of different dataset
  • Develop shared guidelines and best practices for data integrity, version control and long-term preservation
  • Coordinate research data management activities within the project and across collaborating universitie
  • Support onboarding and training of researchers in good research data management practices
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and contribute to building a sustainable community of practice

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Immunology, Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or a related field with a strong focus on data handling
  • Experience working with life-science or immunological research data
  • Knowledge of data repositories, metadata standards, and relevant research IT infrastructures
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with researchers, data scientists, and IT specialists and across disciplinary and institutional boundaries
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills
  • Experience working in collaborative research environments is desirable

What We Offer:

  • Impactful Work: A central role in shaping sustainable data practices for an inter-university immunology research project
  • Collaborative Environment: Close collaboration with researchers and data professionals across three universities
  • Professional Development: Opportunities to further develop expertise in FAIR data, life-science data stewardship, and inter-institutional research infrastructures
  • Flexible Working Conditions: Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, subject to institutional regulations
  • Compensation: Salary according to TV-L (e.g. E13), depending on qualifications and experience

If you are interested, please send your application by 29 March 2026 with a cover letter (including your earliest possible starting date), CV, relevant certificates and references via email to: application@mdsi.tum.de (Please attach all documents as a single PDF file and use the subject line: MDSI TRR338 LETSimmun Data Steward).

TUM is committed to increasing the proportion of women in its workforce and therefore explicitly encourages applications from women.
