Mbiomics GMBH
ABOUT THE JOB
Founded in 2020, mbiomics GmbH is developing microbiome-based therapeutics using a holistic TechBio platform that combines proprietary analytics and data science to advance live bacterial product (LBP) development.
We are looking for a Junior Computational Scientist to join our Research team in Munich. The role sits at the intersection of computational biology and translational drug development, and is ideal for an early-career scientist with a PhD and hands-on experience in biological or clinical data analysis.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Translational Analysis
- Analyze metagenomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and clinical biomarker data from ongoing clinical trials to support product development.
- Generate computational evidence for go/no-go decisions at key development milestones (e.g., donor selection, formulation optimization, safety signal evaluation).
- Integrate multi-omics datasets from patient cohorts to identify treatment-response biomarkers and inform clinical development strategy.
Pipeline Development & Computational R&D
- Develop, validate, and maintain reproducible bioinformatics pipelines for strain-level analysis, functional annotation, and community profiling.
- Contribute to the development of novel analytical approaches when off-the-shelf tools are insufficient—with mentorship from senior team members.
- Support regulatory-grade documentation of computational methods, including traceability, version control, and reproducibility standards required for pre-IND submissions.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work as part of cross-functional project teams alongside wet-lab scientists, clinicians, and regulatory specialists.
- Communicate analytical results clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including for investor communications and publications.
- Provide regular progress updates and flag risks or resource needs early.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, microbiology, or a related quantitative field.
- Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis, and comfort with Unix/Linux environments.
- Hands-on experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data (metagenomics, transcriptomics, or similar).
- Demonstrated ability to go beyond running existing tools—e.g., adapting methods, writing custom scripts to solve non-standard analytical problems.
- Strong data visualization skills and the ability to present complex results in an accessible way.
- Eagerness to learn about drug development, regulatory requirements, and translational science.
PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Experience with microbial community analysis (compositional data, strain-level methods, functional annotation).
- Familiarity with a workflow manager (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake) or cloud computing platforms (GCP, AWS).
- Exposure to clinical or regulated environments (e.g., clinical trial data, IND preparation, GxP-adjacent work).
- Experience with immunological or host-response datasets (flow cytometry, organoids, host transcriptomics).
- Prior industry experience or internship in biotech/pharma.
ENVIRONMENT AT MBIOMICS
- Experience the unique dynamics and spirit of a biotech start-up
- Our team? A colorful mix of international talents, humor and brilliant minds.
- We offer flexible working hours and 30 days of vacation.
- Benefits include our job ticket offer, free coffee, fruit and candy and regular team-events.
