Ph.D. position in optical imaging instrumentation (f/m/x)

Chair of Biological Imaging

27.02.2026, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich and the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit, which provide bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. IBMI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. Comprising 12 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, IBMI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career.

We now seek a highly qualified and motivated Ph.D. student (f/m/x) to drive the development of novel optical technologies addressing significant biological and medical challenges. The Mission:

The successful candidate will play a key role in an ambitious research program focused on developing next‑generation multimodal imaging systems spanning the mesoscopic to microscopic scale. As part of a major research project and supported by extensive national and international collaborations, this effort seeks to shift the landscape of biological and medical imaging through pioneering, miniaturized, multimodal technologies. The candidate will have the opportunity to shape a rapidly evolving field by contributing to both technological innovation and high‑impact biological and medical applications.

Key Responsibilities & Goals:

• Develop a next generation system for quantitative, real-time multimodal mesoscopic and microscopic imaging.
• Contribute to real-time software development for system control, data acquisition, multimodal image reconstruction, and quantitative analysis workflows.
• Collaborate within a European research consortium and engage with international and national partners across multiple institutions.
• Drive innovation in the design and development of miniaturized imaging technologies.

Your Profile:

The successful applicant must have the following:

• M.Sc. in natural sciences, electrical engineering, physics, optics, medical technology, biomedical computing, or a related discipline.
• Excellent track record of academic achievements
• Strong motivation, scientific curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence.
• Experience with optics, fiber optics, sensors, miniaturized systems design and development.
• Programming skills in C++ and MATLAB; additional relevant programming skills are an advantage.
• Strong teamwork skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment.
• Demonstrated writing skills.
• Excellent command of the English language.

Our Offer:

We offer the unique chance to play a role and make a difference in future healthcare. At CBI, we strongly believe in scientific excellence and innovation. This is your opportunity to be part of and to advance your career at a world-leading research institute, where bioengineering principles meet today’s challenges in biology, medicine, and environmental health, toward developing the solutions of tomorrow. You will be part of a dynamic, professional, and highly motivated team within a stimulating environment and gain international exposure through our partners and collaborators across Europe and the world. We support career development, continued education, life-long learning and provide excellent opportunities for professional growth.

Situated on the foothills of the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable cities in the world, with an exceptionally high quality of life. The greater Munich area is also home to several world-class universities, research centers and biomedical entrepreneurship and industry, creating a truly stimulating intellectual atmosphere.

The successful applicant will initially have a 3-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Furthermore, we have the ability to provide a long-term perspective, if mutual expectations are met. Salary will commensurate with work experience and seniority (TV EntgO Bund EG 13). We welcome diversity and applications from talented people regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion, and age. The position is suitable for filling with severely disabled persons. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference granted otherwise essentially equal suitability, ability and professional performance.

Your Application:

We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application , including your letter of motivation, CV, contact details of at least three referees and academic transcripts of records, preferably in English. Please indicate "Ph.D. novel optical technologies" in the subject line.
