We are looking for a doctoral student (m/f/d) (TV-L E13, 75%) in the field of Operations Research and Analytics at the TUM School of Management, TUM Campus Heilbronn, under the supervision of Prof. Jingui Xie, and in collaboration with Prof. Galit Yom-Tov from the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The candidate is expected to conduct research and advance knowledge in the topic of court operations using methodologies from the fields of stochastic modelling, optimization, and data analytics. The position is available from January 2026 and is fixed for a term of 3 years, with the possibility of extension. As part of this role, candidates will have the opportunity - and are encouraged - to pursue a doctoral degree. In addition to research, the fellow will also take on teaching responsibilities.

Prof. Dr. Jingui Xie from the TUM School of Management specializes in Business Analytics and Service Management. He explores how data analytics and stochastic models can enhance healthcare and service systems. His other research includes joint prediction and optimization, queueing game, and reinforcement learning. Prof. Jingui Xie has published his work in leading operations research journals, including Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Production and Operations Management.
Prof. Dr. Galit Yom-Tov focuses on operations of service systems. Currently, Prof. Yom-Tov is the co-director of the SEE-Lab (Service Engineering Enterprise) - a worldwide data hub for research and teaching in Service Engineering. Her research aims to build models for understanding the impact of customer and agent behavior on service systems and to incorporate these behaviors into operational models of such systems. Her multidisciplinary research approach applies a combination of Data Science and Stochastic Modeling to archives of digital traces from service systems. Her recent work used such data to study the dynamics of customer emotions in contact centers, the reaction of customers to waiting announcements in emergency departments, as well as other aspects of service delivery. Prof. Yom-Tov has published her work in leading operations research journals, including Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Stochastic Systems. She served as an AE for the journals Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and as a guest editor for a special issue in Operations Research.

Your tasks...
- Constructing a theoretical framework that applies analytics and modelling in public sectors; analyzing court operations data to support decision makers
- Spending research stays at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology for conducting research at the SEE-Lab when necessary and possible
- Participation in high-quality research projects aimed at publication in top international journals o Presentation of research findings at international conferences
- Teaching to the extent of 3.75 semester hours per week at TUM Campus Heilbronn
- Supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students
Your profile...
- You must (or will soon) have a master’s degree in one of the following areas: Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Management Science, Analytics, Data Science from a university/ department with a strong international research reputation. You must have a bachelor’s degree with solid training in the above areas in a well-known university/ institute.
- Profound knowledge in Operations Research, Management Science, Analytics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and/or Behavioral Research o Basic knowledge in public sector operations management o Strong interest in operations research and analytics with application in public service.
- Knowledge in and practical experiences with programming (e.g., Python, Java, Julia, etc.)
- A strong interest in scientific research with the goal of obtaining a doctoral degree
- High motivation and enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary research environment
