mbiomics is looking for a (Senior) Laboratory Manager, who will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for our laboratories, ensuring they operate at the highest standards of safety, compliance, and efficiency. This role is critical to enabling our scientific teams to focus on their research by maintaining a fully functional, well-organized, and regulation-compliant lab environment. The ideal candidate is an experienced professional with deep knowledge of laboratory operations, strong organizational and leadership skills, and a proven ability to implement processes that drive excellence in a fast-paced biotech setting.

Job description

• Provide strategic oversight and direction for all BSL-2 and GMO lab operations, ensuring seamless daily workflows.
• Lead procurement strategy for laboratory equipment, consumables, and reagents, including supplier selection, negotiation, and cost optimization.
• Oversee and continuously improve inventory management systems to ensure accurate tracking of stock levels, expiry dates, and usage patterns.
• Design, implement, and monitor efficient ordering processes to prevent shortages and minimize delays.
• Direct hazardous materials management, including inventory control, safe handling, and compliant disposal in accordance with biosafety standards.
• Establish, maintain, and enforce comprehensive lab policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Act as Safety Officer to ensure full compliance with BSL-2 and GMO safety regulations, including managing biosafety training.
• Oversee preparation and maintenance of all documentation required for internal governance, audits, and inspections by regulatory authorities.
• Act as the primary point of escalation for operational and safety-related lab issues, providing solutions and guidance.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, safety, and resource utilization.
• Foster a culture of safety, operational excellence, and accountability across all laboratory activities.

Requirements

Essential

• Degree in a natural science discipline (e.g., biology, biotechnology, biochemistry) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Extensive professional experience managing operations in a biotech laboratory environment.
• In-depth knowledge of biosafety regulations, GMO compliance, and laboratory quality standards.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop technical staff.
• Proven track record in implementing and optimizing lab operational processes.
• Strong supplier and procurement management experience.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage complex workloads.
• Attention to detail and precision in documentation and compliance reporting.
• Proactive, problem-solving mindset with the ability to take ownership and drive results.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across scientific, operational, and regulatory teams.
• Proficiency in inventory management systems, LIMS, and standard office software.
• Fluent English & German language skills required.

Desirable

• Experience in a biotech startup or other high-growth research environment.
• Prior Safety Officer certification or equivalent training.
