mbiomics is looking for a Laboratory Operations Manager (m/w/d), who will ensure the smooth and efficient running of our BSL-2 and GMO laboratories, supporting scientific teams by keeping the labs safe, well-organized, and fully equipped. This role combines hands-on operational tasks with responsibility for procurement, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and experienced in maintaining high standards in a fast-paced biotech environment.

Job description

• Coordinate the daily operations of our BSL-2 and GMO laboratories to ensure smooth and efficient workflows.
• Manage the ordering of lab equipment, consumables, and reagents, including liaising with suppliers and tracking deliveries.
• Maintain and update inventory systems to monitor stock levels, expiry dates, and usage patterns.
• Follow and improve ordering processes to prevent shortages and delays.
• Coordinate routine lab duties, including: cleaning and organizing work areas, autoclaving and sterilization, refilling consumables (pipette tips, reagents, disposables)
• Scheduling and overseeing equipment calibration and maintenance .
• Ensure all activities follow established lab policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Support the Safety Officers in maintaining compliance with BSL-2 and GMO regulations.
• Keep accurate documentation for internal records, audits, and inspections.
• Track and document GMO-related activities in line with regulatory requirements.
• Act as the main contact for operational lab issues and resolve them efficiently.
• Identify opportunities to improve lab workflows, organization, and safety.
• Research and suggest new suppliers, tools, and methods to enhance lab operations.
• Promote a safe, organized, and accountable working environment.

Requirements

Essential

• Professional experience in a laboratory environment, ideally BSL-2 and/or GMO facilities.
• Background in natural sciences (e.g., biology, biotechnology, biochemistry) or equivalent practical experience in lab operations.
• Solid understanding of laboratory safety standards, biosafety regulations, and compliance requirements.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
• Hands-on experience with inventory management and procurement processes.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of operational tasks.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
• Good problem-solving skills and a proactive, "can-do” attitude.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with scientists and technical staff.
• Fluent English & German language skills required.

Desirable

• Experience in a biotech startup or other fast-paced research environment.
• Knowledge of equipment calibration, maintenance scheduling, and service coordination.
• Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Previous experience supporting audits or inspections.
• Basic knowledge of supplier negotiations and cost control in procurement.
