Role summary:
Differential Bio is looking for an exceptional Working Student in Software Engineering to join our team in Munich, Germany (on-site) or remotely. This is not a narrowly defined role, but rather a chance for high-agency, driven individual to dive into our most exciting challenges across AI, software engineering, and lab automation for next-gen biomanufacturing. You will directly report to and collaborate with our CTO ( Martin ), and support in solving the most pressing issues across a wide range of activities.
Key responsibilities:
AI & Modeling:
- Contribute to building and refining AI models for microbial behavior prediction.
- Support AI/ML ops: data pipelines, model deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
- Build AI tools to automate knowledge work of scientists (e.g. literature research, experimental planning, data analysis)
Software Engineering:
- Work across frontend and backend development of our digital platform.
- Build interfaces for lab devices and automation workflows.
Lab Automation:
- Translate complex experimental workflows into executable code (think highly complex pipetting logic).
- Design smart automation strategies integrating software, hardware, and robotics.
Qualifications:
♂️ In your application, show us signs of excellence and grit.
- Enrolled student (Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or similar) or equivalent practical background.
- Strong programming skills in Python; bonus points for Bash, JS/TS, or other languages.
- Signs of excellence: - Significant side projects or entrepreneurial ventures.
- Experience in fast-moving startups or founding experience.
- Deep involvement in competitions, hackathons, open-source contributions, or other self-driven initiatives.
- Traits: high agency, autodidact, comfortable with ambiguity, future entrepreneur mindset.
Our toolstack:

- AI/ML: Python, PyTorch, MLFlow
- Infrastructure: Bash, Docker, Linux
- Web: TypeScript, React, shadcn
Nice to have:
- Experience with lab automation or robotics.
- Experience with ML pipelines, cloud infra, or full-stack web development.
- A public track record (GitHub, portfolio, open-source contributions).
