Postdoctoral Position in Haptic Teleoperation and shared control at the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI), Technical University of Munich (TUM) - Garmisch-Partenkirchen Campus
29.09.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal
We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in Haptic Teleoperation and Shared Control at the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI), Technical University of Munich (TUM), Garmisch-Partenkirchen Campus. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
The TUM Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) is a globally visible interdisciplinary research center for machine intelligence, which is the integration of robotics, artificial intelligence and perception. Its three central innovation sectors are the future of health, the future of work, the future of environment, and the future of mobility. More than 70 professors from various TUM faculties cooperate within the framework of MIRMI.
At the Geriatronics Research Center - part of MIRMI and located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen - we develop cutting-edge solutions to enhance quality of life in older age and improve the efficiency of care. Bringing together experts in robotics, healthcare, and Geriatrics, the center fosters a unique environment for impactful research and innovation. We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in haptic teleoperation and shared control, with a particular focus on applications within the Geriatronics Lighthouse Initiative. We seek candidates with an outstanding academic track record and strong potential for a long-term academic career.
TUM strives to raise the proportion of women in its workforce and explicitly encourages applications from qualified women. The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude and professional performance. International applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Priority will be given to applications received by October 25, 2025. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Position Overview
We are looking for an exceptional and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team at MIRMI. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on remote robotic control under network uncertainties, focusing on the development of fault-tolerant and adaptive control architectures for safety-critical bilateral teleoperation. The research will leverage a combination of passivity-based control methods and machine learning techniques to enable reliable and robust teleoperation in uncertain environments.Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research on shared and remote robotic control under uncertain communication conditions, combining passivity-based control, machine learning, and human-in-the-loop systems.
- Design and implement algorithms that enable shared control between human operators and autonomous systems to improve teleoperation performance.
- Maintain active communication and collaboration with industrial and academic partners involved in the project.
- Support the acquisition and management of research funding, including identifying opportunities, building consortia, and contributing to proposal writing.
- Drive the publication of research results in top-tier robotics conferences and journals.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong publication record in telerobotics, shared control, or human-robot interaction, particularly under network constraints.
- Proficiency in working with hardware such as robot arms and software programming in C++/Python, ROS and MATLAB.
- Excellent command of English; German language skills are a plus.
- High motivation and the ability to work independently as well as within an international, interdisciplinary team.
What We Offer
- A dynamic and stimulating research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities.
- The opportunity to engage in high-impact research at the forefront of robotics and AI.
- A unique platform for networking with global experts in robotics, innovative industry leaders, and policymakers.
- The chance to shape scientific and technological directions within the European robotics and AI ecosystem.
- Payment will be based on the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service of the Länder (TV-L).
