ABOUT FUTURAIL
Futurail is a leading technology startup and autonomy powerhouse based in Germany and France. We power the future of autonomous travel on rail with our holistic autonomy stack for self-driving trains. Our mission is to make trains even more attractive by offering frequent, reliable, cost-effective and low-carbon transportation, contributing to the broader goal of transitioning from road to rail. Founded by a team with extensive expertise in autonomous driving and rail, we are committed to shaping the future of rail transportation.
We are entering a phase of rapid growth. This is your chance to join an ambitious team at the forefront of autonomy and rail, working to transform how millions of people move every day!
OUR VALUES
- Bias for Action: We move with purpose and speed.
- One Team: We break down silos to move as one.
- Radical Simplicity: We solve hard problems with the simplest solution that scales.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a Hardware Engineer to take ownership of the physical "brain and senses" of our autonomous rail systems. You’ll bridge the gap between our autonomy software and the rugged safety-critical reality of the railway sector.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design & Iteration: Own the hardware lifecycle for our compute units and sensor kits (Lidar, Radar, Cameras), from initial selection to verification and validation for operational design domain.
- Train integration: Design and build prototype sensor boxes and work with our customers for proper integration of our hardware into their trains.
- HW V&V infrastructure: Build and test functional test setups or work with external labs for our Hardware stack validation, ensuring the requirements are being met or exceed expectations.
- Vendor Management: Be the technical point of contact for suppliers and EMS partners.
- Safety & Compliance: Facilitate end-to-end certification cycles for railway-standard compliance, specialized in EN 50155 environmental testing and safety integration.
- Technical Documentation: Create high-fidelity technical documentation ranging from internal architecture schematics to assembly documents, prioritizing clarity, accuracy, and stakeholder engagement.
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience: 4–6 years in hardware engineering (Railway preferred, Robotics, or Automotive).
- Expertise in electrical and electronics engineering.
- Strong grasp of signal integrity and industrial communication standards (Ethernet, CANBus, etc.)
- Foundational mechanical engineering knowledge (enclosures, mounting, thermal management)
- Competent in AutoCAD Electrical and basic mechanical CAD capabilities (Fusion360/Inventor).
- Experience in building and assembling high-quality electromechanical prototypes.
- Mindset: You’ve seen hardware fail in the field and know how to design for reliability. You thrive in a "move fast, don't break the train" startup environment.
- Education: BSc/MSc in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or similar.
Join us as a Hardware Engineer in our Munich office and help accelerate the shift from road to rail. If you're excited about real-world impact, cutting-edge autonomy, and building from zero-to-one, we’d love to hear from you.
