Job description: PostDoc for Modelling and Data Analysis for Marine Protected Areas (m/f/d)
Background
This position is part of the IMAPP research consortium, an interdisciplinary project with the aim of assessing prospective marine protected areas for their suitability. You will join the Biodiversity Theory Lab which is an active research group working in Network and Complexity Science. The position is based at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity, in Oldenburg Germany. The HIFMB is an interdisciplinary and very international Institute. The working language is English.
You will use a spectrum of mathematical and computational methods to explore the suitability of candidate areas that are considered for MPAs in the Atlantic Ocean. The theoretical analysis will thus profit from close collaboration with colleages with background in aquatic biology and international treaties.
Your Tasks
- Food web modelling using generalized models
- Biological data analysis with manifold learning methods
- Geospatial data analysis of cargo ship traffic
Your Profile
- PhD or equivalent in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or another relevant discipline
- Good command of English language (approximately equivalent to CEFR level B1+B2)
- Relevant mathematical experience (for example in network science or dynamical systems theory)
- Good programming skills in a modern language (e.g. Python, Julia)
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Enthusiasm for ecology and the sea
- Interest in outreach and transfer activities
- Experience in scientific publishing
