The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) has a vacancy for a fixed-term

scientific project position

with a percentage of 50 % (20 h/week) starting on 01. November 2025. The position continues until 30. September 2027.

Remuneration is paid in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L, Public Sector Collective Agreement for the federal states) salary scale at level EG 13.

The position is to be filled on a flexible part-time basis.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association that places great importance on equal opportunities, family-friendliness and work-life balance. Our research focuses on coastal and marginal seas, particularly the Baltic Sea. Staff from the Physical Oceanography, Marine Observation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geosciences departments work together in an interdisciplinary joint research programme.

What will be your tasks?

Within the OTC project DatA2Model-E, you will develop strategies for the optimal placement of measuring instruments in the water column of a (simulated) study area. You will reconstruct the dynamics of the study area from the simulated measurements using mathematical methods and compare the various combinations and placements of the virtual instruments. You will summarise the results in a report/publication.

What do we expect from you?

You have a master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a Natural Science. You should have a good grasp of mathematics, be able to handle extensive data sets and have programming skills. A basic understanding of metrology is also required. Experience of oceanographic measurements and/or modelling would be an advantage.
