Location: St. Paul Office & Community

Position Overview: This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position designed to strengthen volunteer tutor recruitment and expand outreach. This position works with the volunteer manager to recruit, interview, onboard, train, and support a team of volunteers who tutor children in grades K-3.

Responsibilities:

Volunteer Recruitment, Screening & Onboarding

Work with volunteer manager and program managers to:

• Design and implement strategies to attract a diverse group of qualified literacy tutors. This includes outreach through community organizations, schools, active senior centers, colleges, banks, corporations, faith congregations, social media, and local businesses.

• Attend job fairs, post volunteer job descriptions on recruitment websites, make presentations about the importance of volunteer tutoring.

• Write and implement volunteer communications, including email, maintaining volunteer content on the website, social media, volunteer recruitment websites (Hands on Twin Cities, Volunteer Match, etc.) and print outreach materials.

• Follow up on potential volunteer leads and applications. Conduct interviews with prospective volunteers to assess their qualifications, passion for working with children, and commitment to the program’s goals.

• Ensure compliance with all requirements (state, Federal, AARP Foundation, and ESLC) regarding onboarding, including conducting reference checks, completing required paperwork and documentation and background checks.

• Create, maintain and audit both electronic and hard copy volunteer file

Systems Development

Along with volunteer manager:

• Create and maintain a spreadsheet with names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for all current volunteers; update regularly.

• Update and maintain "onboarding” spreadsheet.

• Update and maintain "event network” spreadsheet.

• Update and maintain "outreach” spreadsheet.

• Create checklist and step by step manual about each step on the volunteer outreach-recruitment-onboarding and training process.

Volunteer Satisfaction & Effectiveness

Along with volunteer manager:

• Regularly assess volunteer satisfaction through surveys, one-on-one meetings, or group discussions. Identify areas for improvement and ensure that feedback is acted upon. Monitor and evaluate volunteer effectiveness and student progress and provide additional training or resources where needed.

• Serve as a liaison to facilitate positive outcomes and mutual understanding in cases of disputes or disagreements among volunteers or between volunteers and staff. Address concerns or issues raised by volunteers in a timely, professional, and solution-focused manner.

Other Duties

Meet regularly with the volunteer manager and attend program managers' meetings and all staff meetings.

Attend ESLC meetings, events and training as required.

Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

• Experience working with children and/or volunteers preferred.

• Commitment to literacy education and the mission of ESLC.

• Ability to use digital tools for scheduling, data entry, and communication.

• Availability during assigned tutoring hours and for occasional meetings/trainings.
