Khunsi Onikan: Khunsi Onikan at American Indian Family Center strives to take the best of Western and traditional American Indian knowledge to assist in the healing process. American Indian people who decide to stop using drugs or alcohol have a very high rate of sustained recovery. We think we know why. The Khunsi Onikan program has been designed to merge best practices in substance use disorder treatment with traditional native culture, values, and spirituality in a program that will be a positive force in the lives of American Indian people in St. Paul.

Reports To:

Position Description: The Peer Recovery Specialist will serve clients in the KO program and will support the work of the Treatment director, LADC, and Care Coordinator. The peer recovery specialist will co-facilitate treatment groups and coordinate preparation and return to stasis of treatment groups.

Specific Job Tasks:

• Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery using one-to-one and group sessions. During these sessions the recovery peer will support clients in identifying and creating goals and developing recovery plans with the skills, strengths, helps, and resources to aid them in achieving those goals
• Assist clients in working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps he/she needs to take in order to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery.
• Teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience.
• Assist in obtaining services that suit that individual’s recovery needs by providing names of staff, community resources and groups that may be useful. Inform clients about community and natural supports and how to use these in the recovers.
• Assist the client in increasing social support networks of relatives, friends and/or significant others.
• To offer encouragement in times of crisis.
• Support the work of AIFC volunteers and interns.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or its equivalent;
• Minimum of one year in recovery from substance use disorder;
• Hold a current credential from a certification body approved by the commissioner that demonstrates skills and training in ethics and boundaries, advocacy, mentoring and education, and recovery and wellness support.
• Receive ongoing supervision in areas specific to the domains of the recovery peer’s role by an alcohol and drug counselor or an individual with a certification approved by the commissioner.
• Knowledge of or desire to learn more about the American Indian culture, community, and its resources
• Must be free of chemical use problems a minimum of one year.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Light lifting (less than 15 pounds) may occasionally be required.
• The AIFC is a low-noise facility (under 30 dB) and has private offices and conference rooms.
