The Public Economics group at the University of Hohenheim conducts innovative research on how governmental institutions shape individual behavior. Assistant Professor (fixed-term) or Research Associate (m/f/d).
The preferred starting date is fall 2025 , though we offer flexibility for the right candidate.
Our group investigates topics such as the economics of the public administration, tax enforcement and evasion, distributional preferences, and long-term effects of public policy, especially in declining regions. We apply state-of-the-art quantitative methods , including quasi-experimental and experimental techniques such as field and survey experiments. Our work draws on diverse data sources—from large administrative datasets to unique historical records.

We are looking for a new team member with a strong drive to develop and advance their research agenda and actively contribute to our research activities.
Your responsibilities:
- Conduct independent research in the group’s core areas using experimental or quasi-experimental methods
- Publish in high-ranking, peer-reviewed international journals
- Present research at international conferences, workshops, and seminars
- Apply for and manage third-party research funding independently or collaboratively
- Contribute to the organization of seminars and workshops
- Teach (a moderate load of 2 x 90-minute sessions per week) with flexibility in course design and scheduling and the possibility of reduced load for thesis supervision
- Acquire German language skills (required by the end of the second year)
Your profile:
- Excellent PhD in Economics or a related quantitative field (e.g., Data Science, Public Policy)
- Strong expertise in empirical and/or experimental research methods
- Interest in at least one of the following areas: public administration, tax enforcement, economic inequality, distributional preferences, regional economics
- Independent, well-organized, and highly motivated
- Very good command of English (spoken and written)
- International experience (e.g., research visits or collaborations) is an advantage
Position details:
- Full-time (100% FTE), initially for 3 years, renewable for an additional 3 years after interim evaluation
- Not tenure-track, but offers significant opportunities for professional growth and academic development
- Compensation according to E13 TV-L or A13 LBesGBW , depending on qualifications
