Academic position
Set on a uniquely beautiful campus, the University of Hohenheim combines three faculties - Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business, Economics and Social Sciences - with around 9,000 students en-rolled. Our green campus with its short distances fosters collaboration and provides an inspiring and vi-brant environment for research, teaching, and work. We are shaping a sustainable future and developing solutions to the societal challenges of our time. Here, aspiring minds find a community in which they can grow and thrive. The department of Soil Biology at University of Hohenheim seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher for a tempo-rary position of three years. Our research covers a broad spectrum from fundamental ecological questions to applied research in agricultural management. We are a diverse and active research group, that offers an inspiring environment to develop your own scientific profile. Strong integration with other departments at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, as well as within the Excellence Clusters TERRA and GreenRobust pro-vide great collaboration potential.
The position will be relatively flexible in terms of research topics addressed, as it is part of a new appointment for a professorship in the Department of Soil Biology (Institute of Soil Science and Land Evaluation). We are seeking a person to support establishing a new research direction in the lab, broadly investigating the role of fungi in soil biogeochemical processes. Current ongoing projects focus on the functional translation of soil fungal community data into soil carbon cycling dynamics, integrating principles of life-history strategies and community ecology with modern tools of molecular soil analyses. Part of this research also involves ’big data’ analyses, investigating global fungal trait and genome databases. Other important topics include the characterization of fungal necromass, and its significance for soil carbon cycling. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing and related topics in their research depending on interest and expertise.
We are seeking a motivated scientist with the ability to conduct independent research projects. The responsibilities of the position will include:
- Independent conceptualization, planning and execution of research projects.
- Establishing analytical and bioinformatics standards for molecular analyses in the lab, focusing on high-throughput sequencing and preferentially also metagenomics and genome analyses.
- Publication of results in peer-reviewed Journals, as well as presentation on international conferences.
- Supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in the group.
- Preliminary work and input for future grant applications.
Necessary qualifications for the position:
- A university degree (Master’s or Diploma) in biology, soil ecology, microbiology or a comparable field, and a completed PhD in a related discipline.
- Strong expertise in soil biology and microbiology, with an ecological understanding of biogeochemical processes in soils.
- Excellent knowledge of statistics and bioinformatics analyses; experience in using R software.
- Proven publication experience as first author in peer-reviewed journals.
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
What we offer:
- The position provides excellent conditions to establish an independent research profile and to advance your scientific career.
- An ideal balance of guidance and independence tailored to you.
- An open and friendly team to work with.
- A vibrant and innovative working environment on a green, compact campus, with an office within the beautiful Hohenheim Palace.
- Job ticket and JobBike, cafeteria, health promotion and university sports.
