The Department of Plant Production in the Tropics and Subtropics (490e) at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart (Germany) is offering a 100% permanent position for a highly motivated Technical Lab Coordinator (m/w/d) in Spectros-copy. Starting date is May 1st, 2026. The regular working hours will be 39.5 h per week (100%). Salary will be paid up to the German grade 9b TV-L.
The research within the Plant Production Systems in the Tropics and Subtropics group integrates agronomy with data science to uncover opportunities for sustainable intensification of crop production systems.. To achieve this, we use (spa-tial) crop models and predictive data analytics and conduct process-based research on soil fertility management, nutrient use efficiency and crop diversification.
Your tasks
- Develop and optimize MIRS analysis protocols and operate complex FTIR systems in different measuring modes
- Independently operate and troubleshoot analytical instruments
- Conduct specialized wet-chemical reference analytics (pH, TOC/TN, cation exchange capacity, available nutrients, soil texture) for model calibration/validation
- Evaluation of the processing of spectral data and measurement results
- Organize laboratory workflows, including sample logistics, documentation, SOPs, quality control, and database management
- Supervise students in practical courses and thesis work in the laboratory
- Collaborate within an international, interdisciplinary research team
- Participate in collaborative work in international and multidisciplinary projects
- Support soil sampling and fieldwork campaigns
- Support academic administration tasks
Your Profile
- Completed training as a technical assistant (CTA/LTA/BTA) or Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, soil science, environmental science, or related natural sciences with relevant lab experience
- Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS, ATR, Py-MIRS, EGA-FTIR)
- Experience in data analysis, statistics, and chemometrics (e.g., R programming)
- Experience with soil analysis and wet-chemical reference analytics
- Ability to independently operate and troubleshoot complex analytical instruments
- Strong organizational skills for lab management, sample logistics, and documentation
- Experience with SOPs implementation and quality standards maintenance
- IT skills (Windows, Office, lab software)
- Reliable, careful, and solution-oriented work style
- Teamwork skills and experience supervising students
- Excellent written and spoken English
