Über diesen Job
As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
At the AIT Center for Energy, we are working on solutions for the sustainable energy system of the future. We develop forward-looking technologies and system solutions based on our long-standing expertise, scientific excellence, cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure, and international research collaborations. As a leading innovation partner for industry, we support national and international companies with applied research services that create a competitive advantage in future energy markets. A particular focus of our work lies in the digitalisation of the power system.
Within the research field Power System Digitalisation, we are enthusiastically developing innovative digital solutions and methods to enable secure, flexible, interoperable, and data-driven electricity grids. Our core topics include cyber-physical digital twins, automated control and testing systems, advanced forecasting and energy management solutions, and secure ICT architectures. We work closely with grid operators, energy suppliers, and other stakeholders in the power system industry to ensure that our research has real-world impact and contributes to the reliable and sustainable operation of future energy systems. To strengthen our team in Vienna, we are looking for a:
Junior Research Engineer (f/m/d) Power System Digitalisation
CENTER FOR ENERGY
- You will conduct scientific research and data analysis in digital power systems, applying artificial intelligence (AI) to workflow automation in grid operations, energy management in distributed energy systems, and short-term and long-term forecasting of load, generation, and flexibility. This includes working with time-series data, machine learning models, and data pipelines for real-time and offline analytics.
- You will help develop and apply digital twins for power grids by integrating physics-based models (e.g., power flow, dynamic simulations) and data-driven components to enable real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and scenario-based decision support. You will contribute to the modelling of grid assets and control systems, the synchronisation of simulation and operational data, and the deployment of digital twins in hybrid cloud environments.
- You will design and implement testing and validation environments for software applications in large-scale co-simulation frameworks and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setups by creating automated workflows, test scenarios, and performance evaluation metrics to validate AI-based control algorithms and forecasting tools under realistic and reproducible conditions.
- You will collaborate with your team and project partners and bring your own ideas to help us define national and international research projects, aimed to strengthen AIT’s leading research position.
- You will present your developments and research results at various events and conferences as well as through scientific publications – with guidance from experienced colleagues and mentors.
- You will build and expand your network through the mentioned project work, and other networking opportunities – Hereby you will start shaping your own scientific profile by gaining visibility in the research community and establishing yourself as an emerging expert in the field of power system digitalisation.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
- Completed technical studies (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, software engineering, energy informatics, or a related field
- Solid programming skills, ideally in Python, and experience or interest in data analysis, machine learning, modelling, or simulation of energy systems
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, Docker (ideally Kubernetes), CI/CD, and similar DevOps tools and workflows
- Understanding of power system operation, grid infrastructure, and digitalisation trends in the energy sector is a plus
- High level of initiative, curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
- Willingness to engage in scientific research and publishing, including co-authoring and developing your own contributions under the guidance of experienced researchers
- Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written); German is an asset.
What to expect:
The gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement amounts to at least EUR 55.482,-- as a basis and is supplemented by further, variable salary components. The actual total salary package is determined individually according to your qualifications and experience. In addition, we offer company benefits, flexible working conditions, individual training and career opportunities.
At AIT diversity and inclusion are of great importance. This is why we strive to inspire women to join our teams in the field of technology. We welcome applications from women, who will be given preference in case of equal qualifications after taking into account all relevant facts and circumstances of all applications.
Please submit your application documents including your CV, cover letter and certificates online.
