The Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a
Postdoc (f/m/x) - Health and Longevity
(full-time / 40h per week)
to join the Research Group on Health and Longevity, headed by Marc Luy, for a duration of 3 years. An extension is possible.
The research group investigates trends and differentials in morbidity and mortality. In particular, we aim to better understand the causal mechanisms that enable some individuals to live longer and healthier lives than others. Our analyses draw on a range of data sources, including aggregated data, survey data, and original data collected by the research group. Another focus is on methodological developments in the estimation of life expectancy and health expectancy, especially for populations and subpopulations with incomplete or missing data.
Your Tasks
The successful candidate will work largely independently on (sub)projects within the research group, present their work and findings at international conferences, and publish in leading peer-reviewed journals. They will also supervise student assistants and PhD students, support the research group leader in coordinating research activities within the team, and contribute to grant applications and the acquisition of third-party funding.
Your Profile

PhD in Demography, Social Sciences, Statistics, Economics, or other relevant fields

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Excellent quantitative and analytical skills

Excellent programming skills in R or similar package

Ability to work independently and to collaborate with a broader research team

Solid knowledge of demographic methods, especially in the field of health and longevity

Experience with demographic data

Publication and research track record showing the ability to analyse demographic processes

The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 70.167,44 (full-time based), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.
Start of employment is on 1 September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
