Praedoc (Diss) (f/m/x) - Demography: Family and Labour Market
(part-time / 30h per week)
in the Research Group on Family and Labour Market, headed by Caroline Berghammer, for a period of 3 years. The starting date is 1 February, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Your tasks
We are looking for an outstanding doctoral researcher to join the project “Families and inequality in a flexible world of work” (FLIN; funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant.
This project uses survey and register data to investigate the consequences of flexible working (working from home, flextime) for families and gender equality. The doctoral researcher will specifically study flexible working policies (in connection to family policies and labour market structures) and, based on different surveys, analyse cultural attitudes towards work and/or family.
The successful candidate will carry out research for her/his dissertation project and thus make a visible contribution to the research output of the institute. The person will publish in high-ranking refereed journals and will also present her/his works and results internationally at conferences. In all these contexts, the PhD student will be actively supported by the supervisors and the institute management.
Your Profile
- A completed Master in Sociology, Demography, or other relevant fields with a focus on quantitative methods
- Excellent skills in quantitative methods
- Proven experience in working with microdata
- Experience in policy analysis is an advantage
- Interest in: policies, family sociology, gender inequalities, social stratification, labour market
- Excellence in using statistical software, such as Stata or R
- Proficient oral and written communication skills in English
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a collaborative work environment

For this position we offer an annual gross salary of € 36.594,87, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
