The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a position as

Postdoc (F/M/X) at the Institute of Culture Studies: Austrian Memory 

 within the Memory Culture working group at the Institute of Culture Studies (IKW).

The Institute of Culture Studies at the ÖAW is inviting applications from postdocs specializing in Austrian memory. The aim of the position is to close research gaps in the field of research on Austrian memory identified by the applicant. The call for proposals focuses on projects that deal with the transformation and/or current state of Austrian memory culture and/or memory politics from a critical and innovative perspective, there is no limitation of the possible analyzed topics or time-frames. The IKW offers an interdisciplinary working environment in general and fruitful exchange with fellow memory studies experts in particular.

Applications from postdocs are welcome from all areas of the humanities, social sciences and culture studies. The applicant should have an excellence track record of publishing internationally and being an established expert in the field of memory studies with a focus on Austria. The proposed research project could for example focus on the memory of the National Socialist and/or Austrofascist past, visual/material memory politics/culture, local/regional/national aspects – always in the context of international developments – or other research gaps to be identified in the proposal. 

The position includes

a three-years-employment as a W3 postdoc at the IKW/ÖAW (with an option to extend the contract in accordance with the ÖAW career model if the budget allows) and a standard working place at the Institute of Culture Studies. 

The employment can be either full-time (one position) or 50% (two positions), so please state clearly in your application if you are applying both for the full-time position and the 50%-position or for only one of the variants. There will be no disadvantages for applicants applying for only one or for both variants. 

The monthly salary for a full-time position is gross € 4,930.60 and 2,465.30 for a 50% position.

Duration

Planned start: 2nd. quarter 2026.
Presence at the ÖAW is required according to the ÖAW home office regulations which allow up to 40 % work from home office (in Austria).

Results

The postdoc is expected to publish internationally, give lectures at domestic and international conferences and workshops, apply for third-party funding with projects in the field of Austrian memory studies and to be an active member of the IKW who participates in the institute’s biweekly institute meetings, events and activities.
