Internship in Automatic Air Cavity Detection (m/f) 80-100%

In sheet metal forming, enclosed volumes of air can become trapped between the forming tools and the metal sheet during a press run. As the tools close, this air is compressed, potentially causing forming defects, surface marks, noise, tool wear, or process instability. To mitigate this, shop floors apply venting: drilling vent holes in the tools to allow air to escape. Today, vent placement is largely based on technician experience and trial-and-error, making the process subjective, time-consuming, and hard to standardize.

Your tasks

  • Bring an existing prototype to production quality and integrate it into a solver DLL extension
  • Add essential features such as vent hole size and placement suggestions
  • Robust implementation of geometric algorithms
  • Performance optimization and parallelization
  • Translation of customer needs to a concrete software solution

Your profile

  • Master's or Bachelor’s degree (or in the process of obtaining one) in computer science or engineering or a related field
  • Familiarity with C++ programming
  • Basic geometry knowledge
  • Team Player with a strong commitment to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of English required. German would be a plus

This role is based in Zurich. The duration at 100% workload is 6 months. The minimum workload is 80%, extending the duration accordingly.
