Are you passionate about advancing the frontiers of resilient navigation to tackle the growing challenges of signal interference? Are you an expert in GNSS processing, eager to integrate cutting-edge multi-sensor fusion and AI technologies?
Join our young and dynamic team at the Chair of Space Geodesy , led by Prof. Benedikt Soja . We are at the forefront of developing innovative methods for space- and ground-based geodetic and navigation applications, with the goal of enabling high-precision, continuous, and real-time positioning. Our team has gained prominence for our work in applying machine learning to PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) and geomonitoring challenges, including signal characterization and anomaly detection.
Project background
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to lead our efforts in Resilient Navigation. As global reliance on GNSS grows, so does the need for systems that can withstand jamming, spoofing, and complex environments. This position focuses on developing next-generation navigation software and multi-sensor fusion strategies to ensure precision and reliability in challenging scenarios.
Job description
The successful candidate will lead GNSS-based research within our group and support existing projects related to GNSS and PNT. Key responsibilities include:
- Software Development: Developing GNSS software using Factor Graph Optimization (FGO) based on existing open-source software packages
- Sensor Fusion: Implementing multi-sensor fusion strategies
- Resilience: Advancing real-time GNSS processing with a primary focus on the detection, characterization, and mitigation of jamming and spoofing scenarios
- AI Integration: Exploring the integration of AI/ML concepts to enhance navigation resilience together with other group members
- Hardware & Simulation: Working with both high-grade and low-cost GNSS equipment and utilizing a GNSS signal simulator (Spirent)
- Academic Leadership: Leading and co-authoring high-impact publications and participating in the preparation of grant applications
- Teaching & Supervision: Supporting the lectures "GNSS" and "Navigation" (full course materials exist) and contributing to the supervision of PhD and Master students
Profile
Required Experience:
- PhD in Geodesy, Geomatics, Aerospace Engineering, Signal Processing, or a related field
- Proven experience in GNSS data analysis and processing
- Very good programming skills (e.g., Python, C++)
- Fluency in English
People Skills & Attributes:
- Strong analytical mindset with hands-on problem-solving abilities
- Comfortable working in interdisciplinary teams
- Self-motivated, structured, and curious about emerging AI technologies
Advantageous:
- Experience with Factor Graph Optimization, multi-sensor fusion methods, or AI/ML applications
- CH/EU/EFTA citizenship or a valid Swiss work permit
- Proficiency in German
Workplace
We offer
- Unique access to high-grade and low-cost GNSS networks in Switzerland and beyond
- Independent research at a world-leading academic institution
- A dynamic and international team that embraces fresh perspectives
- A supportive and inclusive work environment that fosters professional growth and development
- Opportunities to attend conferences and collaborate with international experts
- Salary and benefits according to ETH Zurich standards
- Flexible working hours with the option for part-time home office
- An attractive workplace surrounded by nature with quick access to the city center
This position is offered as a 100% Postdoc or, for candidates with an advanced track record, as an Established Researcher ("Oberassistent").
Initial contract duration of 2 years, with a possibility for extension. The ideal starting date is 1 July 2026 or earlier.
