Scientist
We are looking for a highly skilled and proactive expert in mouse genetics and colony management to support the generation, validation, and long-term quality oversight of sophisticated transgenic mouse models.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with operational excellence and a deep commitment to animal welfare. In this role, you will serve as a key interface between internal scientific stakeholders, external breeding partners, and CROs—ensuring that transgenic lines are generated, maintained, and characterized to the highest scientific and ethical standards.
This position plays a critical role in enabling reliable in vivo research and accelerating therapeutic innovation by translating genetic concepts into robust, well-characterized experimental cohorts.
Key Responsibilities
As part of the In Vivo Sciences team, you will:
-
Provide high-level oversight of external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and internal breeding facilities to ensure high-quality delivery, operational performance, and compliance
-
Develop and implement optimized breeding strategies (quality, timelines, cost) to maintain genetic stability and minimize surplus animals, in alignment with the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement)
-
Serve as the primary point of contact for external vivarium managers, troubleshooting issues related to colony performance, phenotype drift, and health status
-
Act as the internal subject matter expert for the generation of new mouse lines using state-of-the-art technologies
-
Define and standardize official nomenclature for newly generated lines in accordance with MGI (Mouse Genome Informatics) and International Committee guidelines
-
Maintain accurate and complete records of genotypes and molecular validation data, including NGS, Southern Blot, and qPCR results
-
Monitor animal health and welfare across experimental cohorts, define humane endpoints, and oversee assessments of unexpected phenotypes in newly generated lines
-
Establish and implement standards for housing and care of contract-bred animals at external partners
-
Collaborate closely with therapeutic area scientists to support initial phenotypic characterization and confirm model suitability for research needs
Must-Have Qualifications & Experience
To be successful in this role, you bring:
-
PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field ⭐
-
3+ years of hands-on experience in mouse genetics and colony management ⭐
-
Proven track record in generating mouse models (e.g., transgenic/knock-in/knock-out lines)
-
Strong project management capabilities, including the ability to manage multiple external vendors and partnerships
-
Solid understanding of regulatory and animal welfare requirements, including FELASA guidelines and relevant legislation ⭐
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (German is a strong plus)
