Prior to launching AccuVISION, he developed the concept of keeping a wide array of frames and lenses in stock to meet his patients' needs for both fashion and function at his DeKalb practice, Eye Fashions Ltd. His takeover of the American Vision Center franchise in Waukegan allowed him to perfect his concept of one-hour mall optometry services.

With the experience he gained from operating those businesses, Doherty began to turn around other struggling optometry practices. One of these was the original site of AccuVISION's Chicago branch, a franchise of American Vision Center. His dedication to fast, reliable service combined with the newest trends in eyewear fashion and visual technology pushed AccuVISION to grow far beyond its origins.

Today, AccuVISION is one of Illinois' largest privately owned optometry practices, with offices in Chicago and the northern suburbs. In 2006, Dr. James Doherty formed AccuVISION & Aesthetics to bring additional services to his clients, including IPL (intense pulsed light) hair and age spot removal, permanent makeup, and microdermabrasion treatments.
