Future Phones of Bluffdale, Utah, maintains a long history in the wireless plan distribution industry. Founded by entrepreneur Wright Thurston, Future Phones grew rapidly in its early years, moving its base of operations to Seattle and opening up cell phone kiosks in high-traffic areas, including Walmart stores, throughout Washington State. In only three short years, the company became one of the nation’s foremost non-retail direct distributors of AT&T Inc. and VoiceStream Wireless Inc. (now known as T-Mobile USA, Inc.) wireless plans.
Since the company’s beginning, Future Phones has made a firm commitment to only hiring experienced and highly driven sales professionals, largely from the door-to-door sales business. Thurston, who had previously achieved success in the pest control and marketing industries, tapped into his network of colleagues to bring on board a team of bright, accomplished managers to help run the firm. Thurston and his team of executives improved upon the Future Phones sales model, eventually concluding that salespeople who could call upon businesses and homes directly to promote their mobile phone packages could achieve higher revenues than an individual selling solely from a kiosk.
Eventually, Future Phones took this idea even further by creating a network marketing model that conformed to the company’s advertising and sales approaches, replacing the traditional store-based retail sales concept. With this model in place, Wright Thurston recruited thousands of commissioned distributors across the country to drive traffic to the company’s e-commerce website, from which customers could purchase a cell phone plan for up to $100 less than what they would pay at a retail store. Thurston sold Future Phones in 2002 and went on to several equally successful ventures, such as business and home security integrator Firstline Security.
