Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute Europe (GEIRI Europe), based in the centre of Berlin, focuses on applied research into technologies for new energies and smart grids. GEIRI Europe is the subsidiary of State Grid Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute (GEIRI), which is located in Beijing. GEIRI itself is the subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China (SCGG).

The state-owned SCGG is the world's largest energy company. With annual sales of over $330 billion, SGCC ranks second in the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's largest companies for several years. GEIRI is part of SGCC's research department and conducts applied research on new energy and smart grid technologies.

GEIRI Europe is one of two GEIRI international institutes outside China. GEIRI Europe is dedicated to research and development of specific energy technologies in cooperation with leading European business partners and academic research institutions.

GEIRI Europe is active in the fields of High-End Electric Materials, Intelligent Sensing and Measurement, and Energy Storage Materials and Technology, thereby improving the ways renewable energies are integrating into the power grid.
