About NewClimate Institute:

NewClimate Institute for Climate Policy and Global Sustainability brings action on climate change from ideas to implementation. We raise ambition for action against climate change and support sustainable and climate-resilient development through research, policy analysis and design and knowledge sharing.

Our objectives

NewClimate Institute supports research and implementation of action against climate change around the globe. We generate and share knowledge on international climate negotiations, tracking climate action, climate and development, climate finance and carbon market mechanisms. We connect up-to-date research with the real world decision making processes, making it possible to increase ambition in acting against climate change and contribute to finding sustainable and equitable solutions.

Climate negotiations: 

A new international climate agreement is to be finalised in 2015. We support the process towards an ambitious agreement through research and analysis on the overall package of the agreement, nature and ambition of intended nationally determined contributions and the possible shape of a long term goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Tracking climate action: 

Action on climate change is very diverse. In addition to national governments, companies, cities, regions and individuals embark on mitigation actions. We track the individual actions and aggregate them to assess whether they are compatible with the overall objective of limiting temperature increase to 2°C.

Climate and development: 

Climate change and sustainable development are closely interlinked. Many countries are therefore developing strategies to integrate climate objectives into their national development goals. We support the development of low-emission economic growth strategies and the implementation of their building blocks such as Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs).

Climate finance: 

Solving the climate challenge means moving investments and helping developing countries to integrate climate concerns in their policies. We evaluate current climate finance flows and develop concrete proposals on how climate finance can be applied most effectively from a funder’s as well as recipient’s perspective.

Carbon market mechanisms:

Carbon market policies within a broader climate policy landscape are a promising way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We evaluate the effects of the existing instruments, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and national emissions trading systems, and develop proposals on the future design of new carbon market mechanisms.

Our experts

The NewClimate Institute team has extensive experience in the area of international climate policy and development. Our expertise covers a broad range of areas, from in-depth insights in specific sectors to high level climate policies. We have close links to research, with several team members associated with universities in addition to their work at NewClimate Institute. All team members are former employees of Ecofys, a leading energy and climate consultancy.

NewClimate Institute commits to delivering high quality results and workable solutions to the public and decision makers. We apply research oriented, robust approaches, responding to on-the-ground realities. We seek to enhance and foster knowledge sharing and exchange with other institutions and individuals around the globe.

Structure

NewClimate Institute is a limited liability company (GmbH) in the process of obtaining the official non-profit status. It was founded by seven partners, which together are the only shareholders. One additional team member is an associate. The NewClimate Institute has offices in Cologne, Germany and Berlin, Germany.
