Tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Theoretical Quantum Computing
The University of Basel, Switzerland, invites applications for a professorship in theoretical quantum computing. The University of Basel is the home institution of the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) "SPIN: Spin Qubits in Silicon” supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The NCCR SPIN is developing fundamental elements of scalable quantum computing with spins qubits in silicon and germanium. More details are available from https://nccr-spin.ch. Linked to NCCR SPIN, a tenure-track assistant professorship has been created in theoretical quantum computing. We are particularly interested in candidates working on quantum error correction, algorithms, simulation and qubit architectures. We are also interested in outstanding scientists in theoretical quantum computing in a broader sense. A primary research direction is to include spin qubits, the main thrust of the NCCR SPIN, and can also extend to other qubit platforms.
Your position
The new professor should make vital and original contributions to the activities of NCCR SPIN and the related departments with a connection to quantum computing, in particular the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI) and the Department of Physics, and should provide leadership in research and contribute to teaching at both Bachelor's and Master's levels at both departments. The professorship will be located at the DMI.
Your profile
Candidates are demonstrating an excellent track-record in theoretical quantum computing including quantum error correction, algorithms, simulation, or qubit architectures.
We offer you
The University of Basel offers a thriving, stimulating, and highly collaborative environment to pursue cutting-edge research in quantum science and quantum computing. The University of Basel is an equal opportunity and family friendly employer. We are very interested to broaden the diversity of academic leadership positions and particularly invite applications of excellent female candidates.
Applications (a short letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a statement on research linking to NCCR SPIN and relevant faculty at the Departments, and a teaching statement) should be addressed to Prof. Dr. Heiko Schuldt, Dean, Faculty of Science, and submitted as a single PDF online: https://biped.philnat.unibas.ch/apply/tenure-professor-theoretical-quantum-computing During online submission, applicants are asked to request three referees to submit confidential letters of reference. For informal inquiries please contact the NCCR SPIN Director, Professor Dominik Zumbühl (dominik.zumbuhl@unibas.ch). Screening of complete application files will start on October 30, 2025, and continues until the position is filled.
