PhD position

Über diesen Job

Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin

The research groups "Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions" and "Organic Contaminants" in the Department of Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry at IGB offer a PhD position to begin on 01 January 2027. This is a DFG-funded research project based in Berlin-Friedrichshagen.

The aim of this PhD position is to determine the role of reducing conditions and oxidoreductases for the attenuation and transformation of trace organic compounds (TrOCs), including pharmaceuticals and iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM). Field experiments will be conducted in an urban river (River Erpe in Berlin) to elucidate the transformation of TrOCs and ICMs in the upper river bed, also known as the hyporheic zone, along pre-defined flow paths. A particular focus will be to determine the impact of oxidoreductases, seasonal fluctuations, and temporary, climate-induced intermittent river drying on TrOC and ICM transformation. Moreover, TrOC transformation will be investigated in an adjacent alluvial aquifer, which is used for drinking water production. The research will combine field sampling at River Erpe, laboratory sample preparation and chemical analytics, as well as data evaluation and paper writing.

We seek a dynamic scientist who is highly motivated to conduct a PhD in an inspiring research environment at IGB. IGB provides an attractive working environment and has excellent equipment, technical support, and provides a PhD programme for PhD candidates. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Technische Universität (TU) Berlin with Dr. Anke Putschew and a PhD candidate at TU Berlin focusing on complementary laboratory experiments to elucidate the role of oxidoreductases on TrOC and ICM transformations under reducing conditions. The successful candidate should be willing to work in close collaboration with the TU Berlin PhD student to integrate results.

Your tasks

  • Field work and sampling at River Erpe
  • Laboratory sample preparation and analysis of water quality parameters
  • Chemical analytics of trace organic contaminants with LC-MS/MS
  • Data analyses and interpretation
  • Writing of manuscripts for publication of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Result dissemination through presentations at national and international conferences
  • Supervision of BSc or MSc theses related to the project
  • Close collaboration with the PhD student at TU Berlin

Your profile

  • Master (or equivalent) degree in environmental chemistry, hydrology, environmental sciences, geoecology, geochemistry, or a related field
  • Practical experiences with field sampling and laboratory work
  • Experience in groundwater hydrology and biogeochemistry, as well as knowledge of chemical analysis of trace organic compounds is a plus
  • Experience in statistical analysis is a bonus
  • Very good English skills including scientific writing
  • Good communication skills
  • Dedicated person with a collaborative team-spirit and willingness to collaborate with TU Berlin
  • Driver’s license class B or comparable

Our offer

We are offering an exciting position in an international and dynamic scientific environment in a beautiful location right next to Lake Müggelsee. We foster flat hierarchies and active participation. We allow maximum individual freedom, enabling everyone to develop and use their creativity to the best of their abilities. You’ll be part of a motivated team that encourages and values active participation and new ideas.

The position is intended for doctoral research for three years and is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (75% E13 TVöD Bund).

We foster your career development by providing qualification and training opportunities. We actively support the reconciliation of work and family life. The IGB is committed to diversity. We welcome every qualified application, regardless of sex and gender, origin, nationality, religion, belief, health and disabilities, age or sexual orientation. Are you interested?

We look forward to receiving your application by 27.09.2026 including a 1-page motivation letter, CV (with publication list if applicable), master and other relevant certificates, a copy of the master thesis (or if not yet completed, a copy of the bachelor thesis), as well as contact information of 2-3 referees. Please state the job reference number 16/2026 and apply exclusively via our recruitment platform at www.igb-berlin.de/en/jobs.

Questions can be directed by email to Jörg Lewandowski (joerg.lewandowski(at)igb-berlin.de) and Stephanie Spahr (stephanie.spahr(at)igb-berlin.de).

"Research for the future of our freshwaters" is the mission of IGB – Germany’s largest and one of the leading international centres for freshwater research. In order to investigate different aspects of freshwater ecosystems, their biota and societal relevance, we unit a wide range of disciplines and understand research as a joint effort. With more than 400 employees and guests from all over the world, we conduct research at five locations in Berlin and at Lake Stechlin (Brandenburg).
