Working at Charité
We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated scientist to pursue a Ph.D. in the field of translational myeloma research.
Our research group is a young, interdisciplinary, and innovative team consisting of physicians and scientists from biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. We work in state-of-the-art laboratories with access to all common technologies. We place great emphasis on structured scientific mentoring and successful onboarding. Our research is currently funded by the Hector Foundation, the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, and the German Research Foundation (DFG). The project builds on extensive preliminary work in which we developed a novel single-cell sequencing technology for the analysis of genome-wide cancer screens. This technology will now be applied to a comprehensive functional screen and complemented by multiple state-of-the-art technologies and validation platforms.
Overview of the position
- Translational PhD project focused on identifying biomarkers that enable early prevention and prediction of the progression from myeloma precursor stages to active disease
- Development and evaluation of targeted therapeutic strategies for patients with hard-to-treat myeloma
- Perform a genome-wide cancer screen in CCND1- and MMSET-deregulated plasma cell tumors in a mouse model
- Characterize resulting tumors in depth using a broad spectrum of bulk and single-cell analyses, with close collaboration and synergies with a parallel single-cell project from our group at the BIMSB
- Validate the most promising candidate genes involved in myelomagenesis using preclinical models
- Conduct subsequent mechanistic studies and translate findings into the human disease context, with the possibility of independently performing bioinformatic analyses
- Application of a wide range of methods and technologies: mouse experiments, single-cell analyses, RNA/DNA sequencing, protein biochemistry, flow cytometry, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, bioinformatics/data science
- Work with diverse model systems: genetically modified preclinical models (including mice), cell lines, primary patient material, and patient datasets
- You are engaged in scientific work, and in accordance with §110 (4) sentence 3 of the BerlHG (Berlin Higher Education Act), an appropriate amount of time is granted to you for your own scientific qualification
What we are looking for
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, computational biology, pharmacy, bioengineering, or a related field
- High motivation, strong commitment, and excellent communication skills
- Solid knowledge of molecular and cell biology
- Excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken
- Desirable: prior experience with preclinical models (e.g., FELASA certificate) and/or bioinformatic analyses
Charité offers you
- Highly professional work environment in motivated and interdisciplinary teams
- A future-oriented, varied and demanding position with a high grade of personal responsibility and personal decision making opportunities
- Special offers in the areas of shopping, travel and sports
