Full-stack web developer for evidence synthesis of animal and human data project funded by the Wellcome Trust

Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland
Post Duration: 3 years
Starting date: Negotiable, but as soon as possible

We are seeking an outstanding web developer to join our international, interdisciplinary project GALENOS (www.galenos.org.uk), the Global Alliance for Living Evidence on Anxiety, Depression and Psychosis, which aims to improve early scientific discovery by integrating evidence from human and animal studies. GALENOS is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The project is a continuously updated ("living”) systematic review of published studies from human and animal studies on treatments and risk factors of mental health. The project will be implemented in a "living” and interactive web platform.

We envision the development of an interactive research platform-implemented as a web application, computational notebook, or LLM-based Agent. The platform will enable users to input data from animal and human experiments separately (or retrieve data from external repositories), specify statistical synthesis models, and facilitate the evaluation of the results guided by transparent methodological workflows.

The successful candidate will design and implement a user-centred interface that supports these analytical processes while ensuring that all outputs adhere to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). A strong emphasis will be placed on building tools that promote transparency, reproducibility, and verifiability in scientific research.

Within a multidisciplinary and highly motivated environment, the post will provide the opportunity to the successful candidate to work in collaboration with various European research groups of evidence synthesis.
Setting: The post is in the Evidence Synthesis Methods research team and it is funded for three years on. The grant also supports conference and meetings attendance. Research supervision will be provided by Prof. Georgia Salanti and Dr. Theodoros Papakonstantinou.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain the platform for undertaking the project
  • Build the tools for performing and reporting the systematic reviews of animal and human studies
  • Orchestrate the services for performing triangulation of evidence, and report.
  • Implementing original statistical models (developed by the team's statisticians).
  • Collaborate with statisticians, systematic review methodologists, laboratory researchers, and experts with lived experience.
  • Prepare high-quality publications, contribute to methodological tutorials, and present findings at international conferences.
Qualifications
Education
  • MSc or equivalent post graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline

Professional Experience
  • Full stack development experience (frontend + backend)
  • Proven track record of building packages in R or Python
  • Familiarity with Linux system administration

Technical Skills
  • Web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript and a modern framework such as React, Vue or Svelte)
  • Experience with R Shiny (or willingness to learn it).
  • Containerisation with Docker (and orchestration concepts).
  • API design & integration (e.g., REST, gRPC)
  • Git with a branching strategy
  • Documentation in Markdown

Statistical knowledge
  • Basic statistics competences; ability to translate R statistical models into software packages
  • Advanced statistical knowledge and previous experience with hierarchical regression models, meta-analysis, and Bayesian statistics are an asset

Programming interests
  • Interest or experience with functional programming languages (Haskell, Elm, PureScript, etc.) is an advantage.

Other skills
  • Fluency in English (written & spoken).
  • Ability to collaborate with statisticians, systematic review methodologists, lab researchers, and subject matter experts.
What We Offer
  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge methodological research at the interface of human and animal health
  • A dynamic, collaborative, and supportive working environment
  • Mentorship and career development opportunities
  • Competitive salary and benefits according to institutional guidelines
Application
