Research Scientist (Phd - all genders) for Nuclear Physics Experiments
The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, is under construction through international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team of employees committed to world-class science.
The FRS/SFRS Experiment department is one of the major partners for nuclear physics experiments at the GSI accelerator facility. It enables experiments with exotic nuclei at the fragment separator FRS and conducts an original research program at the borderline of nuclear, hadron and atomic physics; the department prepares for novel experiments at the next-generation super-conducting fragment separator Super-FRS of FAIR. It is integral part of the NUSTAR Collaboration.
The FRS/SFRS Experiment group offers a 2-year postdoc position for a
Research Scientist (PhD - all genders) for Nuclear Physics Experiments
Posting-ID: 25.103-1234
Position overview and responsibilities:
The candidate (all genders) will participate in the research with exotic nuclei and will be integrated in collaborative activities of the NUSTAR and Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration. The candidate (all genders) will contribute to the data analysis of FAIR Phase-0 experiments, their interpretation and publication. The candidate (all genders) will work together with the experimentalists of the FRS/SFRS Experiment group, participate in experiments and scientific-technical developments using the FRS as development platform for Early-Science experiments at the Super-FRS, for instance for new ion-optical modes, detector tests and pilot experiments. The task specifically allows to develop an individual scientific-technical profile in the framework of the Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration.
Main activities:
- Participation in experiments with exotic nuclei, data analysis of FAIR Phase-0 experiments
- Development of an own research profile within the research program of the Super-FRS Experiment Collaboration
- Scientific-technical support during preparation and execution of experiments.
Education and experience requirements:
- PhD in the field of experimental nuclear, atomic or hadron physics
- Hands-on experience with magnetic spectrometers, heavy-ion or radiation detectors, nuclear physics electronics or data acquisition and analysis systems (e.g., ROOT)
- Ability to design and perform experiments combining magnetic spectrometers with complex detector systems
- Self-motivated, able to integrate in an experiment team and to work well within the team
- Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Desired qualifications:
- Proven experience in nuclear physics experiments, preferably with exotic nuclei, and related data analysis
- Experience with simulation codes (ATIMA, MOCADI, LISE++, GEANT, etc.)
- Experience with ion-optical design and related simulations.
The position is limited to a duration of 2 years. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
GSI promotes the professional development of women and therefore expressly welcomes applications from women.
Handicapped persons will be preferentially considered when equally qualified.
For further information please contact Dr. Emma Haettner (e.haettner(at)gsi.de).
Information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu.
Applications should include:
- A letter which exhibits the record of accomplishments and expertise, the candidate’s research interest and future goals
- A CV and a list of publications
- Names of three possible references.
If you find this position interesting and challenging and would like to work in an exceptional, international scientifically excellent environment, please send your application documents with information of your earliest possible starting date and the posting ID 25.103-1230 by 3rd of October 2025 at the latest via the online portal on our job site
