Research Associate / Light Microscopy Specialist (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13TV-L)
starting January 1, 2026. The position is limited until December 31, 2032. The period of employment is governed by § 2 (2) Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). Balancing family and career is an important issue. The PoL Cluster of Excellence (
https://physics-of-life.tu-dresden.de/en
), a central scientific institution, is an interdisciplinary research center for biology, biological physics, and computer science currently under development and has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since January 2019.
You will be part of the microscopy and image analysis facility team at PoL and work in a highly interdisciplinary environment. This position offers the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively in a highly dynamic and interactive research environment. Your role will be to help researchers at PoL with modern bio-image data analysis, big-image-data management and image-data-mining solutions. The specialist will also work with research groups to develop new image analysis tools and Artificial Intelligence methodologies to enhance image analysis.
Working field:
- scientific research activities
- train users on and provide support with existing image analysis methodologies
- set up and maintain computing infrastructure dedicated to data storage and analysis
- scientific develop custom-made image analysis pipelines in collaboration with research groups

help develop, deploy, and operate infrastructure for storing, analyzing, and visualizing research data
You will work in close collaboration with the IT services of the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bio-engineering (CMCB), the Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing of the TU Dresden (ZiH), the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI) Dresden/Leipzig, the Center for Systems Biology Dresden (CSBD), international collaborators, and PoL members.
We invite applications from open-minded candidates who value knowledge sharing and building bridges between disciplines. We encourage scientists to apply who do not yet have deep expert knowledge in biomedical image data science yet but strive to acquire that knowledge and skills.
Requirements:
- university degree (M.Sc., Diplom, or Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, or natural science)
- experience in programming languages such as ImageJ Macro, Python, Matlab, R, C++, Java, bash and willingness to strengthen programming skills
- experience in image/data science projects and/or software such as ImageJ, Fiji, Imaris, QuPath, CellProfiler, Cytomine, Icy, DeepLabCut, ilastik, scikit-image, scikit-learn, Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch, Galaxy, SnakeMake, Omero, MicroManager, MorphoGraphX, napari or SR-Tessler
- excellent english communication skills
- experience in open-source software development, skills in microscopy and/or experience in biophysics, wet-lab biology, computational biology, or systems biology is a plus
