The Facility for Data Sciences and Biostatistics (Dr. Juliane Liepe) invites applications for a Data Scientist / Bioinformatician (f/m/d) to support cutting-edge interdisciplinary research across the institute.
This on-site position involves close collaboration with scientists from diverse research areas, providing advanced data analysis, contributing to methodological development, and supporting training activities in data science and biostatistics.
Key tasks
- Perform and support transcriptomics and proteomics data analysis for diverse research projects.
- Develop and maintain reproducible computational pipelines and data analysis workflows.
- Program and implement statistical methods using R and Python.
- Design and deliver online teaching materials and training workshops for scientists.
- Supervise and train PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in data science and biostatistics.
- Provide expert consultation to research groups across the institute.
- Contribute to best practices in data management, reproducibility, and open science.
Requirements
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, data science, systems biology, or a related quantitative field.
- Demonstrated research track record in Transcriptomics and Proteomics data analysis.
- Experience with multi-omics data integration, machine learning approaches for biological data, statistical modelling and high-dimensional biological datasets.
- Experience with computational pipeline development.
- Strong programming skills in R and Python.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary environments.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Experience with reproducible research practices (e.g., version control, workflow management, documentation).
- Ability to design and deliver training and educational content.
- Experience supervising or mentoring students or early-career researchers.
- Strong problem-solving skills and scientific rigor.
- Ability to translate complex statistical concepts for non-specialists.
- Project management and organizational skills.
Desired skills
- Familiarity with high-performance computing environments or cloud computing.
- Experience with workflow tools (e.g., Snakemake, Docker, Singularity).
- Experience in interactive data visualisation and dashboard development.
- Experience developing online courses or e-learning platforms.
- Knowledge of research data management standards (FAIR principles).
- Experience working in core facilities or service-oriented research environments.

Position details
The position is initially limited to two years, although permanent employment thereafter is not ruled out. Remuneration is based on the TVöD Bund (German federal civil service pay scale), depending on qualifications and professional experience. In addition, public sector social benefits apply.
