We are looking for an excellent specialist and researcher to expand our internationally renowned scientific and research agenda in the field of surgery for congenital heart defects/pediatric cardiac surgery by following a translational approach. The successful candidate should be a proven expert in the field of surgery for congenital heart defects/pediatric cardiac surgery and represent it in research, teaching and patient care. The Division of Cardiac Surgery of the University Cardiac Center Graz (UHZG) offers the complete range of surgical procedures for congenital heart defects and pediatric cardiac surgery including heart transplants in cooperation with other divisions (especially for pediatric cardiology, cardiac/thoracic/vascular anesthesia and cardiology). There are a variety of established cardiovascular research areas at this location. Excellent research conditions and modern infrastructure as well as the availability of laboratories, 3D printing models and diverse core facilities along with large multidisciplinary networks provide an optimal foundation. In addition, the division has an extensive network of national and international partners in science and industry that can be relied upon to promote innovative projects as well as interdisciplinary exchange. The initial appointment is limited to six years with a qualification agreement (tenure track model pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). The career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.

Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Serving as the clinical and scientific director of the pediatric cardiac surgery program within the Division of Cardiac Surgery
  • Expanding and profiling the program in at least one of the following research areas: neonatal cardiac surgery, surgery for univentricular heart defects, pediatric heart transplants, surgical care for adults with congenital heart disease (CHD)
  • Innovatively advancing research in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery
  • Regularly publishing scientific papers in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery
  • Designing, acquiring, implementing and managing funded research projects
  • Establishing and leading a nationally and internationally recognized multidisciplinary team and promoting junior researchers and clinicians
  • Networking through national and international research collaborations
  • Providing inpatient and outpatient care according to modern biopsychosocial and personalized medicine and being on call
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in medicine, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting junior researchers
  • Participating in effective public relations work/science communication in the research area

Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • Degree in medicine and a relevant doctoral degree
  • Authorization to practice as a specialist in cardiac surgery or the equivalent qualification from another country
  • Extensive experience in pre- and postoperative patient care in the field of surgery for congenital heart defects/pediatric cardiac surgery
  • Experience in independent care covering the entire range of surgical procedures for pediatric cardiac surgery/surgery for congenital heart defects, including neonatal cardiac surgery, univentricular heart defects, pediatric heart transplants or adults with CHD (documented in the surgical log)
  • Great expertise in translational and clinically oriented research with regard to pediatric cardiac surgery/surgery for congenital heart defects in the form of high-impact publications and acquisition of third-party funding
  • Experience in setting up and directing a scientific working group
  • Experience in university teaching and/or (co)supervising diploma/doctoral students and/or training postdoctoral scholars
  • Proven track record of international networking
  • Research stay abroad of several months at a different research institution than the one where specialist training was received
  • C1 level of proficiency in both spoken and written German and English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
