The best (junior) researchers from around the world who hold their own in the selection procedure have a unique opportunity as tenure track professors at Med Uni Graz: they can establish a working group in their field of research in the state-of-the-art, point-of-care environment of Medical Science City Graz and share their special expertise with the international research community over the course of a long-term scientific career. The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of translational bioinformatics and precision medicine. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and teaching with a focus on genome analyses in the context of precision medicine and liquid biopsy. The Diagnostic & Research Institute of Human Genetics at the Medical University of Graz focuses its research on rare and inherited tumor diseases, precision medicine, and in particular on liquid biopsy technologies. The institute is dedicated to the non-invasive analysis of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA), providing dynamic insights into tumor-associated molecular changes that underpin early cancer detection, biomarker discovery, and minimal residual disease monitoring. Applications now extend beyond oncology into prenatal diagnostics, transplant medicine, immunology, and autoimmune disorders. Excellent research conditions and a state-of-the-art infrastructure - including a molecular diagnostics laboratory, a large-scale Biobank Graz, and integration into the Diagnostic and Research Center for Molecular BioMedicine offer an optimal foundation. Moreover, the institute maintains an extensive network of national and international partners across academia and industry, which together foster innovative projects and interdisciplinary exchange. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.
Ihre Aufgaben in dieser Position beinhalten:
- Conducting cutting-edge research in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology with a focus on liquid biopsy
- Producing high-quality scientific publications on a regular basis
- Establishing and leading an internationally recognized research group and acquiring third-party funding
- Networking through national and international research collaborations
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting young researchers
- Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area
Für diese Position bringen Sie folgende Qualifikationen und Kenntnisse mit:
- PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in computational biology or a related field
- Excellent knowledge in computational biology and bioinformatics with a focus on liquid biopsy
- Experience with NGS data analysis (WGS, WES, cfDNA)
- Proven track record of high-quality publications
- Peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding
- Experience in leading a research group
- Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and postgraduate students
- Postdoctoral research abroad or at an institution different from where the PhD was completed
- High level of proficiency in written and spoken English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching at the Medical University of Graz and for participation in university committees
