The Department of Baltic Studies at the University of Greifswald combines its teaching with research into Baltic literature and the contemporary situation of Lithuanian and Latvian in a variety of ways. The Department runs its own bachelor’s degree course in Baltic Studies and is involved in the master’s degree courses Linguistic Diversity and History and Culture of the Baltic Sea Region. In terms of research, the Department specialises in sociolinguistics and narratology, which gives it a wide range of connections to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Job description:
- Academic services in research at the chair
- Planning and realisation of own research projects and the acquisition of third-party funds, especially in connection with the sociolinguistics of Lithuania or Lithuanian in comparison with its neighbouring countries
- Academic teaching for the degree courses the Department is involved in or runs (teaching language is German)
- Participation in committees and commissions of academic self-administration
- Responsibility for subject-specific student counselling and Erasmus coordination
Job Requirements:
- At the time of employment, a completed doctorate on a Baltic sociolinguistic topic related to Latvia or Lithuania
- Research specialisation in sociolinguistics, focusing on Lithuania and the languages spoken there
- Experience of teaching at university level in areas relevant to the position
- Near-native German language skills (C2 level)
- Excellent Lithuanian language skills (C1 level)
Desirable:
- Excellent language skills in Latvian or a Slavic language at C1 level, preferably Polish or Russian
- Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding
- Experience in digital teaching
- International academic contacts in areas relevant to the position
- An independent, method-tolerant and comparative approach to scholarly work and the ability to work in a team
