Data Scientist (f/m/d)
Über diesen Job
Job Description
The Thünen Institute of Forestry of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg invites applications for a fulltime position (39 hours/week) for a limited period of one year as soon as possible in the working area forest products markets as Data Scientist (f/m/d) with focus on international forest products markets.
The Thünen Institute of Forestry examines the national and international framework conditions for forestry and forest-based industry as well as forest-based livelihoods, evaluates the various services provided by forests and derives political and economic options for action. The working area of forest products markets is dedicated to the analysis of wood use and trade on a national and international scale.
The job holder will focus on the development of a program code to detect and potentially replace erroneous global trade data by using machine learning techniques.
The UN Comtrade database serves as a key source of global trade data, which is used to conduct various analyzes of the global wood products trade at the Thünen Institute of Forestry. However, the database contains errors, including data gaps, missing values, outliers, and bilateral asymmetries. This hampers the effective use of trade data and compromises the accuracy of the analyses. Thus, the aim is to first develop a modular and reusable program code that identifies outliers and data gaps within the UN Comtrade data. In a second step, a module that systematically cleans trade data, including the imputation of missing or erroneous values, should be developed and added to the program code. The programmed code is intended to be reusable for the Thünen Institute after the project's completion.
- Familiarization with the UN Comtrade database, focusing on wood market-relevant codes of the Harmonized System (HS)
- Analysis and evaluation of available preliminary work in the context of international trade data
- Conceptualization and presentation of a procedure for identifying and correcting inconsistencies and errors in large trade datasets
- Implementation of the procedure in code, preferably in Python
- Collaboration on the preparation of scientific publications
- Master's degree or equivalent (M.Sc./Diploma) in a relevant field such as Business Informatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Economics, or a related discipline with a specialization in data analysis and data processing
