Research Software Engineer for Digital Research Infrastructure (m/f/d)

The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – Program Area C, Research and Development, is looking to employ a
to work in the Open Science Lab (OSL) as of the earliest possible opportunity.
The position is initially limited until the end of the project period of the research project "Science & Heritage Infrastructure for Enduring Long-term Data (SHIELD)", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), on 31st of December 2027. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
Your challenge
The SHIELD research project is a collaboration between TIB, Safeguarding Research and Culture (SRC) and Data Rescue Project (DRP). The aim of the project is to establish a sustainable, decentralized and openly networked infrastructure for the long-term preservation and resilience of endangered scientific and technological research data sets, especially those of central importance to European research. This will be based largely on an instance of SciOp (using BitTorrent) operated by TIB and TIB's infrastructure for long-term digital archiving.
As a research software engineer for digital research infrastructure, you will be primarily responsible for the implementation and further development of SciOp at the TIB. You will develop, implement and test new SciOp features in line with a roadmap agreed with the SHIELD project team and partners SRC and DRP. In doing so, you will take into account the security and sustainability of SciOp in operation at the TIB and in subsequent use by third parties. With a high degree of personal responsibility, you will be able to apply your skills in software development and maintenance, while cooperating with the digital archiving community.
Your tasks include
- Roadmap planning, maintenance and active further development of the free and open source software (FOSS) project SciOp in close coordination with internal and external cooperation partners
- Development of an interface between the SciOp platform and the TIB's digital long-term archive (Rosetta)
- Special consideration of security and sustainability in operation at the TIB and by third parties
- Collaboration to the development of a sustainable, decentralized and openly networked infrastructure for the long-term security and resilience of endangered scientific and technological research datasets
Requirements:
Your profile
- Completed scientific university degree (Master's degree or equivalent), preferably in a relevant information science or computer science-realted programme (e. g. library and information science, information management, data science)
- Proven experience in contributing to web development and/or open source projects
- Independent, goal-oriented and structured working style
- Very good written and spoken English skills
Desirable additions to your profile
- Knowledge of and practical experience in programming with Python
- Experience with web service technologies (REST, OAI-PMH)
- Experience in software development in cooperation with volunteers
- Knowledge in the field of digital archives
- Knowledge in the field of (open) research data and FAIR research data management
- Good German language skills
