Your Role

We are recruiting a (Senior) Expert (m/f/d) in Human Toxicology who will play a central role in coordinating cross-functional projects focused on the toxicological risk assessment of cosmetic ingredients—guiding them from early development through to product marketing. In this position, you will provide strategic advice on human safety to internal stakeholders and act as a subject matter expert for external customers using Symrise products.

As part of this role, you will contribute to strengthening our expertise in New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and Next Generation Risk Assessments (NGRAs), while continuing to apply conventional toxicological methods to support regulatory submissions, including REACH and other global notification requirements.

Your key responsibilities:

  • You perform toxicological safety/risk assessments focusing on cosmetic ingredients.
  • You perform toxicological information search and evaluation, study monitoring, QSAR predictions, and exposure estimation/modelling.
  • You maintain databases of Symrise-owned toxicity studies and risk assessments.
  • You support chemical notifications (e.g., REACH) and product-specific dossiers (e.g., SCCS submissions).
  • You support the development and marketing of Symrise products and address customer requirements/issues.
  • You support the transition to safety assessments not based on animal studies with NAMs and NGRAs.
  • You provide advice on toxicological knowledge to Regulatory Affairs, Marketing & Sales, Research & Innovation, as well as to Symrise customers.
  • You have the option to represent Symrise in consortia as well as in respective organizations and their initiatives (e.g., EPAA – European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing).

About You

  • You hold an advanced degree (MSc/PhD) in Life Sciences such as Toxicology, Chemistry, Biology, or another relevant discipline.
  • You have expert knowledge and practical expertise in performing risk/safety assessments.
  • You have experience with toxicological risk/safety assessments within the chemical, cosmetic or healthcare industry, specialized service provider/consultancy, or relevant health and safety authority.
  • You have experience with non-animal-based risk assessments (NAM & NGRA).
  • You demonstrate effective project management and coordination skills.
  • You have relevant experience with the cosmetics regulations (EU Cosmetic Directive, US FDA, SCCS), as well as chemical regulations (REACH, TSCA).
  • You have knowledge in assessment tools (QSARs, read across, grouping, exposure modelling).
  • You have a proven ability to interact effectively within a cross-functional, multi-disciplinary team matrix environment, being an opinion leader.
  • You demonstrate attention to detail and uphold high ethical standards in the workplace.
  • You are fluent in English with strong verbal and written communication skills; additional German language skills are beneficial.
