PhD Position - Quantum Computing for Power Systems Security

At the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering (ICE-1), we develop advanced models, algorithms, and control solutions for simulating, optimizing, and operating future integrated energy systems. We address the challenges arising from the increasing integration of renewable energy, sector coupling, decentralization, and growing energy infrastructure complexity. The Control Solutions department develops methods and algorithms for controlling energy systems and their components. We focus on application-oriented methods that can operate in real time and are suitable for operating decentralized systems. We aim to enable the reliable, cost-efficient, resilient, and sustainable operation of future energy networks by combining our knowledge of energy systems with cutting-edge developments in machine learning, generative AI, and digital infrastructures.

Your Job

The increasing complexity of future power systems, driven by renewable energy integration, power electronics, and distributed energy resources, requires computational methods capable of solving security assessment and optimization problems at unprecedented speed and scale. While high-performance computing (HPC) has become the backbone of large-scale power system simulation, emerging quantum computing technologies have the potential to further accelerate selected computational tasks. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of quantum computing based solutions for next-generation power system security applications.

We are currently seeking a Ph.D. student to research the following topics:

  • Investigation of quantum computing methods for contingency analysis, optimization, and dynamic security assessment
  • Development of hybrid quantum–classical algorithms for power system security assessment and operation
  • Integration of quantum algorithms with large-scale HPC simulation frameworks developed at ICE-1
  • Benchmarking and performance evaluation of quantum, classical, and hybrid approaches using realistic transmission and distribution system models
  • Development of scalable workflows exploiting state-of-the-art HPC infrastructures and emerging quantum computing platforms
  • Collaboration with leading national and international partners in the fields of quantum computing, scientific computing, and energy systems

Your Profile

  • Excellent university degree (Master’s) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research at the interface of energy systems, high-performance computing, and quantum computing
  • Strong background in mathematics, optimization, numerical methods, or scientific computing
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Julia, or MATLAB)
  • Interest in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, and hybrid quantum–classical computing. Previous experience is considered an advantage but is not required
  • Knowledge of power systems, optimization, or high-performance computing is highly desirable
  • Experience with quantum software frameworks (e.g., Qiskit, PennyLane, Cirq) or HPC programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, GPU computing) is considered an advantage but is not required
  • Motivation to conduct excellent scientific research and publish in leading international journals and conferences
  • Very good command of written and spoken English with extensive vocabulary is required (at least B2 level according to the CEFR), ideally supported by a certificate confirming the language level
  • Prior German knowledge is not required

Our Benefits for You

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

  • Team & Environment: You will work in a motivated team with an international and interdisciplinary focus – at one of the largest research institutions in Europe
  • Research & Infrastructure: Access to world-class scientific infrastructure, including Europe’s first exascale supercomputer JUPITER, the JUNIQ quantum computing ecosystem, and state-of-the-art HPC facilities at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. You will work with advanced power system simulation frameworks and digital twin technologies developed at ICE-1 for large-scale transmission and integrared energy systems
  • Supervision & Support: Possibility to pursue a PhD at RWTH Aachen University under the scientific supervision of Prof. Andrea Benigni, inlcuding mentoring and career development for both academic and industrial career paths
  • Work-life balance: We offer flexible working hours to help you balance your professional and personal life. You also have the option of flexible working (in terms of location), which is generally possible after consultation and in line with upcoming tasks and (on-site) appointments
  • Annual Leave: You get 30 days of annual leave
  • Knowledge & Development: Your professional development is important to us – we support you specifically and individually e.g., through training and networking opportunities specifically for doctoral candidates (JuDocS)
  • Campus experience: Our research campus in the countryside creates ideal conditions for collegial exchange and sporting activities right on site. Our cafeteria offers a wide range of options—you can enjoy a relaxing lunch break with a lake view
  • Fair remuneration: Depending on your qualifications and assigned responsibilities, you will be classified according to pay group 13 (75%) of the TVöD-Bund. In addition to the basic salary, there is an additional year-end bonus under the collective pay agreement amounting to 75% of a monthly salary, as well as capital-forming benefits. All information about the TVöD-Bund collective agreement can be found on the BMI website (pay scale table on page 66 ff. of the PDF download)
  • Fixed-term: The position is limited to 3,5 years
  • Support for international employees: Our International Advisory Service makes it easier for international employees to get started
