Research Fellow (f/m/d)
Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), Leipzig
The Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) conducts comparative research into the history and culture of the region between the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic from late antiquity to the present day. The institute has been based in the centre of Leipzig since 2010 and employs around 90 staff from Germany and abroad. Since 2025, the GWZO has also an office in the centre of Prague.
Since March 2025, the GWZO has been hosting the research project "The Cotton Empire in the East: A Commodity History of the Soviet bloc”. The project takes the history of cotton and related commodity chains as a starting point to explore the global connections and interconnectedness of the Soviet bloc’s economy.
This project is part of the collaborative initiative "Commodity Frontiers in Eastern Europe: Environment and Societies at Global Risk (16th-21st Centuries)”, conducted in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) in Regensburg and the German Mining Museum in Bochum. The project situates Eastern Europe in the historical geography of global capitalism by identifying commodity frontiers in the region. It explores the formation and dynamics of these frontiers and examines their impacts on local societies as well as their political, economic, environmental, and geographical contexts. The project is financed by the Leibniz Association via third-party funding in the framework of the funding format Leibniz Collaborative Excellence.
For the research project based at the GWZO department "Entanglements and Globalisation", we are looking to recruit:
