The University Medical Center Mannheim stands for quality-assured, university-based maximum care and is one of the largest medical institutions and research centers in the region. With the Medical Faculty Mannheim within Heidelberg University that is rich in tradition, and the University Hospital Mannheim, we unite two strong partners. Every year, we offer a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutic procedures to around 52,000 inpatients and day patients and 212,000 outpatients. In 30 specialist clinics and institutes, 5,000 employees are equally committed to patient care, research and teaching.
The Stellos Lab (www.StellosLab.com) at the European Center for Angioscience of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the Heidelberg University is recruiting a visionary
Senior Scientist / Group Leader on Bioinformatics / Computational Biology on RNA Regulation in Disease (f/m/d; tenured)
This is not just a job—it’s a mission. A rare opportunity for a pioneering computational biomedical scientist to lead from the front in a field poised to change the future of medicine. Join us to decode the language of RNA, shape the future of cardiovascular research, and lead discoveries with global impact.
About Us
The Stellos Lab (www.stelloslab.com) is an internationally recognized research group at the forefront of RNA biology and cardiovascular science. We harness integrative computational and experimental strategies to unravel how RNA modifications govern health and disease. Our lab environment is dynamic, ambitious, and collaborative—committed to pushing the boundaries of biomedical innovation.
Your role
As a senior scientist and group leader, you will:
- Lead high-impact projects in RNA biology, including bulk and single-cell RNA-seq, epitranscriptomics (e.g., detection of RNA modifications based on nanopore direct RNA sequencing data), and integrative multi-omics analysis Build and optimize robust bioinformatics pipelines for data integration, visualization, and interpretation focusing on RNA metabolism (RNA-protein interactome, sequence motif, Alu biology, RNA editing, RNA modifications) Collaborate with experimental biologists to design and validate studies Apply machine learning to uncover novel mechanisms and therapeutic insights Mentor junior scientists, contribute to grant writing and publications, and drive the lab’s scientific vision Apply for extramural funding and build an own computational biology research group
Your profile:
- A PhD (or equivalent) in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology More than 5 years postdoctoral experience with several publications on RNA regulation in disease using computational biology methodologies and software development techniques. Strong expertise in genomics with focus on RNA omics including nanopore direct RNA sequencing and/or RNA modifications and proficiency in working with high-throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-seq, CLIP-seq, epitranscriptomics, phosphoproteomics, post-translational modifications) Proven experience with programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia and bioinformatics tools Familiarity with cloud computing and high-performance computing (HPC) environments Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in statistical analysis and data visualization Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Desirable experience:
- Experience with cardiovascular research or related biomedical / health research fields Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn) Familiarity with databases and tools for RNA biology (e.g., GENCODE, RNAcentral, Modomics) Experience in multi-omics data integration and pathway analysis
What we offer:
- A permanent position with a competitive salary under the E15 TV-L pay scale Access to state-of-the-art computational and experimental resources A dynamic, collaborative, and supportive research environment Opportunities for professional development and interdisciplinary collaboration A vibrant and international scientific community at the forefront of cardiovascular research Tailored mentoring
We stand for equal opportunities. Severely disabled persons are given priority in the case of equal suitability. We are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in science. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in computational biology and cardiovascular research.
Applications must be submitted exclusively via the UMM job portal. Email applications will not be considered. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is appointed. Interviews are already underway — apply today and seize the opportunity to lead innovation in RNA biology and medicine.
For informal inquiries about the position, please contact Prof. Konstantinos Stellos, konstantinos.stellos@medma.uni-heidelberg.de , Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Research, Heidelberg University.
