Mechanisms, Mechatronics and Robotics Engineer (m/f/d)

This position combines hands-on engineering responsibility for internally developed mechanisms and robotic systems with Technical Supply Management (TSM) activities for externally procured subsystems. Candidates are expected to actively contribute to both areas throughout their career development. The role focuses on the development and technical management of challenging mechanism and robotic systems for space applications, offering the opportunity to work on the complete lifecycle of highly demanding aerospace products. As the department is currently pursuing and preparing several potential projects in the field of space robotics, experience or a strong interest in robotics, mechatronics, motion control and autonomous systems is considered a significant advantage.

Your Tasks

Internal Development of Mechanisms and Robotics Systems

• Define and analyze technical requirements and develop concepts for space mechanisms, mechatronic systems and robotic applications.
• Support the complete development lifecycle from concept definition through verification and delivery, considering performance, manufacturability, reliability, cost and schedule constraints.
• Coordinate technical activities with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including Mechanical, Structural, Thermal, Electrical and Optical Engineering.
• Perform requirement flow-down, interface management and technical budget management at subsystem and equipment level.
• Take technical ownership of assigned mechanism or robotic equipment and support its development throughout the project lifecycle.
• Select, specify and size mechanism and drivetrain components such as motors, sensors, bearings, gear stages and transmission elements.
• Evaluate mechanical designs, engineering drawings, manufacturing concepts and tolerance allocations with respect to functionality, manufacturability and reliability.
• Perform technical analyses, trade-offs and simulations to support engineering decisions regarding performance, manufacturability, reliability, verification and cost, using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and MSC ADAMS.
• Support Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) activities through active participation in integration and test campaigns, troubleshooting support and assessment of verification results.
• Support the development and evaluation of future robotic technologies and applications for space missions.
  Contribute to technical proposals, internal R&D activities and the continuous improvement of departmental methods, processes and technologies.

Technical Supply Management (TSM) of External Developments

• Act as Technical Supply Manager (TSM) for externally developed mechanism, mechatronic and robotic subsystems.
  Serve as a technical interface between suppliers, project teams and engineering disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
• Define technical requirements, interfaces, technical budgets and acceptance criteria for subcontracted developments, support their proper flow-down to supplier level and contribute to the closure of related technical issues.
• Review and assess supplier-proposed concepts, analyses, designs, manufacturing documentation and verification evidence to ensure compliance with project requirements.
• Monitor technical progress, requirement compliance, risks, non-conformances and mitigation activities throughout the supplier development lifecycle.
• Support the preparation, execution and close-out of technical reviews and milestones, including SRR, PDR, CDR, QR and TRR activities.
• Coordinate and support verification, qualification, acceptance and integration activities, including participation in major subsystem test campaigns when required.
• Support the successful delivery of compliant, verified and fully documented subsystems in accordance with project requirements.
• Provide concise technical reporting and recommendations to project management and internal stakeholders.

Your Qualifications

• Successfully completed degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or a comparable technical discipline.
• 0-5 years of relevant professional experience in the development of mechanical, mechatronic, robotic or aerospace systems, including internships, research projects or student activities.
• Good understanding of mechanism, mechatronic and/or robotics engineering principles.
• Experience or strong interest in robotics, motion control, kinematics, autonomous systems or robotic mechanisms is highly desirable
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, engineering drawings, geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance allocation and technical budget management, with the ability to evaluate designs regarding functionality, manufacturability, reliability and performance.
• Knowledge of mechanism and drivetrain components such as electric motors, sensors, encoders, bearings, gear stages, shafts and transmission systems, including their selection, sizing and performance assessment.
  Knowledge of tribology, lubrication concepts and mechanical performance assessment is considered an asset.
• Understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements management, interface management, verification and qualification.
• Experience with engineering analysis and simulation tools, preferably MATLAB/Simulink and/or MSC ADAMS.
• Interest in hands-on engineering activities, including hardware integration, testing, troubleshooting and participation in Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) campaigns.
• Ability and willingness to take technical ownership of assigned equipment and subsystems throughout the development lifecycle, including the progressive assumption of Technical Supply Management responsibilities for external suppliers.
• Experience with CAD tools is beneficial for design assessment, communication with design teams and design reviews; however, the role is primarily focused on concept development, engineering analysis, technical coordination and system-level decision-making rather than detailed CAD design activities.
• Strong analytical, communication and teamwork skills, together with a structured and solution-oriented working style.
  Fluent in English, both written and spoken; German language skills are considered an asset.
