PhD Position in Theoretical Algorithms or Graph and Network Visualization
31.07.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal
We seek PhD students with strong theoretical foundations and a desire to contribute to fundamental algorithmic research. Our group works at the intersection of algorithms, machine learning, and interactive visual interfaces. Topics of interest include:
- Planar and geometric graph algorithms
- Approximation and parameterized algorithms
- Clustering, embeddings, and structural graph theory
- Computational complexity and efficient algorithms -Graph drawing and layout algorithms (including dynamic and high-dimensional visualizations)
- Visualization in non-Euclidean spaces (e.g., spherical or hyperbolic)
- Perceptual studies and evaluation methods
- Interactive systems for exploring complex networks
Candidates interested in theoretical computer science will have the opportunity to work on topics such as graph algorithms, computational geometry, algorithmic complexity, and combinatorial optimization. Our contributions are regularly published in top venues like the Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Symposium on Algorithms (SEA/ESA), and the Graph Drawing and Network Visualization Symposium.
For those interested in graph and network visualization, the group offers an active and well-established research environment. Ongoing projects include the development of new techniques for visualizing graphs in Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces, dimensionality reduction, and user-centered evaluation of visual interfaces. The group’s work in this area has led to best paper awards at PacificVis and Graph Drawing, with recent publications in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and Computer Graphics Forum.
The Chair for Efficient Algorithms offers a collaborative environment that combines strong theoretical foundations with a deep engagement in applied and interdisciplinary projects. PhD students are encouraged to work closely with the broader academic and industrial communities, contribute to open-source tools, participate in international conferences, and develop their own research agendas.
TUM Campus Heilbronn is a rapidly growing center for research and education, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence and data science. It is located next to the AI Innovation Park Heilbronn, fostering collaborations with academic partners like ETH Zurich, as well as companies and startups working on applied AI and high-performance computing. The entire curriculum and research infrastructure operate in English, and no knowledge of German is required.
This is a full-time PhD position with a competitive salary according to the German TV-L E13 scale (approx. €52,000–€75,000 gross per year, depending on experience), 30 days of paid vacation, and full access to health insurance and social benefits. The working environment is international, supportive, and highly interdisciplinary.
To apply, please send a cover letter describing your research interests and indicating whether you prefer to work in theoretical algorithms, visualization, or a combination of both. Include a CV, your Master’s thesis, and academic transcripts with grades, and send it to the email address positions [at] algo.cit.tum.de.
We look forward to hearing from curious and driven researchers ready to join an active and well-connected team at one of Germany’s leading technical universities.
