Senior Mechanisms, Mechatronics and Robotics Engineer (m/f/d)

This position combines technical leadership for internally developed mechanisms and robotic systems with Technical Supply Management (TSM) responsibility for externally procured subsystems. The role is focused on technically challenging and highly complex space mechanism and robotics developments and includes acting as a technical authority within the discipline, supporting engineering teams and projects with expert judgement, risk assessment and technical decision-making. Depending on project needs, the position covers both internal development and external supplier management activities and requires active contribution to both domains. As the department is currently pursuing and preparing several potential projects in the field of space robotics, experience in robotics, mechatronics, motion control and autonomous systems is particularly valuable.

Your Tasks

Internal Development of Mechanisms and Robotics Systems

• Lead the definition of technical requirements, architectures and concepts for highly complex space mechanisms, mechatronic systems and robotic applications.
• Act as a technical authority for the discipline, supporting projects and engineering teams with expert knowledge, risk assessment and problem resolution across the full project lifecycle.
• Drive technical development activities for demanding and mission-critical systems from early concept studies through verification, qualification and delivery while balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability, cost, schedule and risk.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities and provide technical leadership across Mechanical, Structural, Thermal, Electrical, Software and Systems Engineering disciplines.
• Lead technical trade-offs and support key engineering decisions involving performance, reliability, manufacturability, verification, schedule, cost and risk.
• Lead mechanism- and robotics-related analyses and simulations, including motorization, kinematics, tribology and dynamic performance assessments.
• Define and assess mechanism architectures, drivetrain concepts, tolerance strategies, model philosophy and verification approaches for complex space systems.
• Lead and support Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) activities by providing technical direction during integration and test campaigns, driving anomaly investigations and ensuring successful verification and qualification of complex systems.
• Lead technical contributions to proposals, bids, feasibility studies, R&D activities and technology development projects, including future mechanisms and robotics technologies and mission concepts.
• Contribute to the development of engineering methods, tools, processes and core competencies within the department while mentoring and supporting engineers across different experience levels.

Technical Supply Management (TSM) of External Developments

• Act as Technical Supply Manager (TSM) and overall technical authority for externally developed, technically challenging mechanism, mechatronic and robotic subsystems.
• Serve as the primary technical interface between suppliers, project teams, customers and engineering disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
• Define technical requirements, interfaces, technical budgets and acceptance criteria for subcontracted developments, ensure their proper flow-down to supplier level, and steer the closure of related technical issues.
• Review, challenge and steer supplier-proposed concepts, analyses, designs, manufacturing documentation and verification evidence to ensure compliance with project requirements.
• Lead technical reviews and milestones, including SRR, PDR, CDR, QR, TRR and associated close-out activities.
• Assess technical risks, non-conformances, waivers and deviations, and drive mitigation strategies together with suppliers and project stakeholders.
• Coordinate verification, qualification, acceptance and integration activities, including participation in major subsystem test campaigns and reviews, and drive the successful delivery of compliant and verified subsystems.
• Support proposal activities, supplier evaluations and technology roadmaps for future projects and business opportunities.

Your Qualifications

• Successfully completed degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or a comparable technical discipline.
• At least 7 years of relevant professional experience, including responsibility for the development, assessment or technical management of complex mechanisms, mechatronic systems, robotics or aerospace products; 10+ years are considered advantageous.
• Extensive experience in the development, analysis, verification and qualification of technically complex, multidisciplinary and mission-critical systems, combined with the ability to make sound technical decisions under challenging boundary conditions.
• Strong expertise in mechanism and drivetrain technologies, including electric motors, sensors, encoders, bearings, gear stages, shafts and transmission systems, as well as their sizing and performance assessment.
• Deep understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, engineering drawings, geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance allocation and technical budget management, with the ability to critically assess and challenge technical concepts and designs.
• Experience with engineering analysis and simulation tools, preferably MATLAB/Simulink and MSC ADAMS.
• Experience supporting and technically leading Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) activities, including anomaly investigations, troubleshooting and verification campaigns for complex mechanical, mechatronic or robotic systems.
• Broad systems engineering understanding, including requirements engineering, interface management, verification, qualification and technical risk management.
• Proven experience in technical leadership of multidisciplinary development activities and/or technical supplier management in complex engineering projects.
• Ability to mentor engineers and act as a technical authority within project teams and across engineering disciplines.
  Experience with CAD tools is beneficial for design assessment, technical coordination and design reviews; however, the role is focused on concept development, technical leadership, analysis and system-level decision-making rather than detailed CAD design activities.
• Strong communication, stakeholder management and decision-making skills combined with an entrepreneurial and solution-oriented mindset.
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken; German language skills are considered an asset.
