PRTG Network Monitor is a 30-year-old product built on 2+ million lines of Delphi code. It's trusted by 500,000+ users worldwide and generates significant recurring revenue. But the architecture has reached its limits - scaling, cloud deployment, and modern feature development are constrained by technical debt accumulated over three decades.

Apollo is Paessler's strategic initiative to modernize PRTG's core architecture. We're extracting business logic from Delphi and rebuilding in Rust, using AI-assisted development as the primary methodology. This isn't a rewrite-from-scratch - it's a surgical extraction that preserves business continuity while enabling a cloud-native future.

The Director AI Engineering owns Apollo - Paessler's flagship legacy modernization initiative. You'll lead the technical strategy, build the team, and drive delivery of a multi-year initiative that transforms how PRTG is built and deployed.

This role is equal parts technical leadership, delivery leadership, and organizational change. You'll work directly with executive leadership on strategy while maintaining enough technical depth to evaluate trade-offs. If you thrive on hard problems with high stakes and ambiguity, this is the role.

We need a leader who can own this transformation end-to-end.

YOUR TASKS

Initiative Ownership (Apollo)

  • Own Apollo delivery: scope, timeline, quality, and stakeholder alignment
  • Drive the program from current Build phase through completion
  • Establish governance frameworks, quality gates, and decision-making processes
  • Navigate cross-team dependencies and remove blockers
  • Manage scope deliberately - know when to say no

Technical Strategy

  • Ensure architectural approach supports extraction goals
  • Validate AI-assisted development workflows are effective and evolving (tooling, prompts, validation)
  • Maintain quality, security, and performance standards for extracted modules
  • Make build-vs-buy decisions on tooling and infrastructure
  • Stay current on AI coding tools and assess applicability to Apollo's context

Team Building

  • Build and scale the Apollo engineering team (architects, developers, specialists)
  • Execute and refine hiring strategies for AI-assisted development roles
  • Develop internal capabilities through training and knowledge transfer
  • Foster a culture of experimentation balanced with delivery discipline

Stakeholder Management

  • Align engineering, product, and business stakeholders on Apollo priorities
  • Report to executive leadership on progress, risks, and resource needs
  • Communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Champion AI-assisted development practices internally

YOUR PROFILE

Must have

  • 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in leadership roles
  • Proven track record delivering large-scale technical transformation or migration programs
  • Experience building and scaling engineering teams (hiring, coaching, performance management)
  • Strong architectural judgment — ability to make sound technical trade-offs under uncertainty
  • Business acumen — can translate technical work into business value and executive communication
  • Comfort with ambiguity — this program has unknowns; you'll need to make progress despite them

Nice to have

  • Experience with legacy modernization, language migrations, or large-scale refactoring
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, etc.)
  • Background in compiled languages (Rust, C++, Delphi/Pascal, or similar)
  • Experience in B2B software, infrastructure products, or developer tools
  • Familiarity with network monitoring or systems software domains

FACTS FOR YOU

  • Many possibilities to further develop your individual skillset
  • Innovative and creative work environment with plenty of room for new ideas
  • A structured onboarding phase with experienced colleagues
  • Flexible working hours and a familiy-friendly environment
  • Permanent employment contract at our headquarters in Nuremberg
  • A great working atmosphere in an enthusiastic international team with flat hierarchies
  • Subsidized germany-wide jobticket for public and regional transportation, bike leasing, bicycle cellar (incl. showers) and sufficient parking spaces
  • We actively support your health by funding membership of the Urban Sports Club
  • Paessler is a fast-growing midsized company that has been in the market for 20 years. The company is focused on long-term goals and is currently comprised of 350 employees
