About us

Bridging music and hearing research, the Music Perception Lab is part of the Institute of Music and active in the Collaborative Research Center Hearing Acoustics at the University of Oldenburg. Core topics in the lab include music perception of hearing-impaired listeners, auditory scene analysis, vibrotactile augmentation of music, and concert research. A long-term goal of the lab is to understand the acoustical and cognitive factors that determine musical scene perception and develop music augmentation approaches for music listening of hearing-impaired listeners. Located in the university town of Oldenburg, the Institute of Music is among the largest University institutes of music in Germany. It offers a vibrant environment with brand-new facilities for research on music perception and a broad range of musical facilities. There is also access to world-class research facilities in acoustics and cognitive neuroscience.

The goal of this specific position is to contribute to the development of the Music Perception Lab on all fronts including psychoacoustic experiments, vibrotactile augmentation, and concert-based research.

Your tasks

• Development and implementation of stimulus manipulation for perceptual experiments
• Contributing to research on musical scene analysis
• Contributing to research on vibrotactile augmentation
• Contributing to routine tasks and projects in the lab
• Close collaboration with cooperation partners of the project
• Publication of research results in scientific journals
• Contributing to grant applications
• Active participation in scientific conferences
• Supervision of students and research assistants

Your profile

Recruitment requirements are:

• PhD in music perception and cognition or neighbouring field
• University degree (MSc/MA) in musicology, psychology, acoustics, audio engineering, media technology, applied physics, or a related discipline
• Knowledge in music perception and perception-based modeling of music signals
• Very good skills in statistical modeling of experimental data
• Good knowledge of written and spoken English
• Willingness to travel

Ideally you have:

• Track record of international journal publications in the field of music perception
• Deep knowledge of music psychoacoustics and hands-on experience in vibrotactile perception
• Experience with concert-based research
• Experience with playing/performing/producing music
• Knowledge of audio workstations and environments (e.g., DAWs, MaxMSP, puredata)
• Very good communication skills
• Ability to work in a team
