About us

ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the functioning of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups. The position is associated with the working group of Biogeochemical Ocean Modeling at ICBM.

Your tasks

The successful candidate will further develop and refine modelling approaches for our model on organic matter cycling in the ocean, with a particular emphasis on representing the diversity of microorganisms and the chemical compounds with which they interact. A central aspect of the position is the design and implementation of a coupled modelling framework that integrates a physical host model component with an interaction network model of microbial communities developed within the biogeochemical ocean modelling group. The candidate will be responsible for realizing the model coupling and for conducting numerical simulations to investigate the biogeography and chemogeography of organic compounds and microorganisms in marine environments. In addition, the position involves disseminating research results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting findings at national and international conferences.

Your profile

Required skills and experience:

• University degree (diploma or master, not from a University of Applied Sciences) in a field of natural sciences, preferably with a focus in geosciences
• Excellent PhD in the field of Geosciences, Planetary Sciences or Earth Sciences
• Documented experience in numerical modeling in the Earth Sciences context, e.g. Earth System Models or Ocean Circulation Models, including modification of source code
• Own scientific standing exemplified by published articles in peer-reviewed journals and presentation in international conferences
• Excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and in writing

Additional skills preferred:

• Expertise in biogeochemical ocean modeling
• Experience in supervising students at the Bachelor and/or Master level
