Position Overview - Tasks & Responsibilities:

As an intern within the MSAT Device Circularity Team at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, you will support the Device Circularity Program. At the Johnson & Johnson site in Schaffhausen‑Neuhausen, a new operational capability has been established to enable the dismantling of used autoinjector devices returned through the Safe‑Returns program. This development marks an important step toward implementing a closed-loop material recycling system. The Schaffhausen production site, located close to the dismantling facility in Neuhausen, intends to transfer its discarded devices (from production processes as well as qualification and validation activities) to the dismantling unit. To enable this process, several key aspects must be considered, which will be addressed in this bachelor’s thesis. The first three areas are to be covered in the thesis; the fourth area is optional and does not necessarily need to be included.

Key responsibilities include:

JNJ Circular Economy for Devices / Autoinjectors

Description of Johnson & Johnson’s sustainability goals, which are closely aligned with the climate targets of the Paris Agreement. These goals are embedded in the J&J ESG strategy, which clearly mandates combining ecological responsibility with product innovation within JNJ Innovative Medicine.

Handling of Discarded Devices Containing Potential Residual Drug Product

Discarded devices may still contain residual quantities of drug product. Since the Neuhausen site is not authorized to receive such materials, a compliant process must be implemented in Schaffhausen to ensure the complete removal of all drug residues prior to shipment. In addition, the resulting waste stream of the drug product must be safely disposed of in accordance with regulatory requirements. Possible scenarios are to be developed and assessed for feasibility.

Assessment of Potential Impacts on Environmental Permits

Any required adjustments or updates to environmental permits—both for the Schaffhausen and Neuhausen sites, must be examined to ensure regulatory compliance during the implementation of the new material flow.

Consideration of Scalability and Rollout Potential (Optional)

A potential expansion of this process to additional sites, such as the European Distribution Centre in La Louvière, Belgium, should be evaluated to assess broader applicability and future scalability.

Qualifications – Education and Skills:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Engineering & Resource Management, Engineering, Economics, or a related field, with a strong interest in the pharmaceutical industry, sustainability .
